Immigration Situation in Australia / Nurses

According to unpublished data from the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (2004) the number of immigrant overseas trained nurses nearly tripled between 2000 and 2004 (cited in Jeon & Chenoweth, 2007, p. 17)
. In 1996 the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (1999, cited in Omeri & Atkins 2002, p. 496) reported that 23.6 % of all qualified nurses were born outside Australia, including 7.4% from a non-English speaking background.
Statistics from 1982 to 1994 indicate that the sources of immigrant nurses were as follows: 48% from the UK/Ireland, 25% from Asia, 12% NZ/Oceania and various countries all over the world (Hawthorne, 2000, cited in Hawthorne, 2001, p. 217).
The phenomenon of a growing CALD workforce within this group is seen to be a result of the global nursing shortage (Jeon & Chenoweth, 2007, p. 17). The dilemma is that the CALD nurses were found to experience difficulties in transition that seemed to be caused mainly by language and cultural barriers (DEST, 2007, Chapter 7.1.4).
However, the situation might have changed over time due to increased cultural awareness and acceptance as well as rise in numbers of skilled migration (Australian Bureau of Statistic, 2006). Nowadays, nurses are required to prove a high level of English language ability in by passing the International English Language Test System (IELTS) with a score of seven or Occupational English Test (OET) grade B for the professional licence to practise with the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Council (ANMC) (n.d.) and the state nursing board’s registration, before applying for a skilled visa DIAC (n.d.).
In the past the English language test was judged to have prevented 67% of CALD nurses % from outside Australia and 41% of those in Australia from applying for nursing registration (Hawthorne & Toth, cited in Hawthorne, 2001, p. 222). They further report that only 29% of CALD nurses gained nursing registration immediately without attending a bridging program, and of those required to complete competency-based bridging programs 90-95% had passed in Victoria whereas only 55-71% passed in NSW.
Despite having passed the hurdles of the English language test, professional recognition and visa conditions that determine successful transition to the new Australian work place, is sill experienced as a huge challenge. Therefore, some NESB nurses end up working as Nursing Assistants or are even lost to the nursing work force (DEST, Chapter 7.1.4; authors observation).
DEST therefore postulates that bilingual/cultural skills should be better integrated and more valued and that support and encouragement is needed, “rather than perceiving their other language as an impediment or embarrassment to be denied or ignored”(Chapter 7.1.3). It appears that I was right telling you to check your Google Caffeine rankings in a recent article called Google Caffeine Update - is it Good News for You?.

Today, just a couple of days after the article went live, Google announced the official launch of Google Caffeine – the new search architecture. At http://www2.sandbox.google.com/ where the developer's preview used to sit we have this message:

"We appreciate all the feedback from people who searched on our Caffeine sandbox.

Based on the success we've seen, we believe Caffeine is ready for a larger audience. Soon we will activate Caffeine more widely, beginning with one data center. This sandbox is no longer necessary and has been retired, but we appreciate the testing and positive input that webmasters and publishers have given."

Caffeine is being rolled out and obviously there gonna be changes in the search results. I hope you had enough time to check your Caffeine rankings, because if you did you now know what to expect from the big update it could be an unwelcomed surprise. Keep your Rank Tracker project or excel spreadsheet at hand and all ranking fluctuations should be easy to foresee.

The transition to the new search architecture will take place in spoonfuls – data center after data center. When you see that your site rankings coincide with or become close to the ones you recorded when you last checked your positions in Caffeine that will mean that the new architecture is already there.

For those of you who didn't check Caffeine rankings – don't be surprised to see your sites' Google positions go either way. And even if your rankings go down, there's no need to panic. The timing and amount of blood flow you experience during your monthly menstrual cycle depends on the coordinated performance of your endocrine glands, which produce the hormones necessary for menstruation to occur when pregnancy does not. What they do affects what happens in your reproductive organs.

First, What Are the Reproductive Organs?

The uterus is a pear-shaped organ which, in its non-pregnant state, is collapsed and about the size of your fist. It is located between the bladder and the lower intestines.

The lower third of the uterus is called the cervix. The cervix has an opening called the "os," which opens into the vaginal canal and permits your period to flow out.

Extending from each side of the uterus are the fallopian tubes. Near the end of each fallopian tube is an ovary.

The ovaries are almond-sized organs which produce eggs. Each ovary contains from 200,000 to 400,000 follicles. These follicles contain the material necessary to produce eggs.

The inner lining of the uterus is called the endometrium. The endometrium sheds during menstruation. In addition to endometrial tissue, your menstrual flow also contains blood and mucus from the cervix and vagina. When pregnancy occurs, the endometrium thickens and fills with blood vessels that mature into the placenta that contains the growing fetus.

Which Hormones Interact with the Reproductive Organs?

The area of the brain called the hypothalamus, together with the pituitary gland, which also is in the brain, control the hormones necessary for reproductive health.

Six hormones serve as chemical messengers to your reproductive system. These hormones include:

* Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)
* Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
* Luteinizing hormone (LH)
* Estrogen
* Progesterone
* Testosterone

During your menstrual cycle, GnRH is released first by the hypothalamus. This causes a chemical reaction in the pituitary gland and stimulates the production of FSH and LH. Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone (yes, the "male" hormone) are produced by the ovaries in reaction to stimulation by FSH and LH. When these hormones work harmoniously, normal menstrual cycles occur.

Your Menstrual Cycle in Phases

The menstrual cycle is divided into two phases--the follicular or proliferative phase; and the luteal or ovulatory phase. The follicular phase includes the time when menstruation occurs and is followed by proliferation or the growth and thickening of the endometrium. This phase typically lasts from 10 to 14 days, starting with the first day of menstruation.

Estrogen and progesterone levels are at their lowest during menstruation. When bleeding stops, the proliferative phase begins causing the endometrium to grow and thicken in preparation for pregnancy. During the next (approximately) two weeks, FSH levels rise causing maturation of several ovarian follicles and the size of the eggs triple.

FSH also signals the ovaries to begin producing estrogen which stimulates LH levels to surge at around day 14 of your cycle triggering one of the follicles to burst, and the largest egg is released into one of the fallopian tubes.

This phase is followed by the premenstrual phase, known as the luteal phase. This premenstrual period lasts approximately 14 days. After ovulation, LH causes the corpus leuteum to develop from the ruptured follicle. The corpus leuteum produces progesterone.

Together estrogen and progesterone stimulate the endometrium to prepare a thick blanket of blood vessels that will support a fertilized egg should pregnancy occur. When pregnancy occurs, this blanket of blood vessels becomes the placenta which surrounds the fetus until birth.

When pregnancy does not occur, the corpus leuteum deteriorates and becomes the corpus albicans. Once this occurs, progesterone and estrogen levels decline, and the endometrial lining is shed during menstruation.
* Periods can vary greatly from woman to woman and from month to month and still be normal. Generally, the length of your menstrual cycle can fluctuate from 3 weeks to 5 weeks, without alarm.

* When counting the days in your cycle, always count the first day of your period as day one. The average period lasts about 6 days, although some women may experience slightly shorter or longer periods and be perfectly normal.

* Variations in the amount of menstrual flow and the timing of menstruation are quite normal in young women during the first few years following the onset of menstruation. Periods may be irregular or very light. The use of oral contraceptives can often cause fluctuations in menstruation which include either light periods or spotting/bleeding between periods.

* It is not uncommon for young women to feel frightened when dark clumps of tissue is discovered in their menstruation. However, this is usually nothing abnormal and just a part of the endometrium, or uterine lining that is shedding.

* The average age of the onset of menstruation is about 12 or 13, however it may begin as young as 8 for some girls or not until 14 or 15 for others. If your period has not started by the time you are 16, see your physician to determine whether there may be an underlying condition.

New report published on effects of Abortion from the Pension and Population Research Institute (PAPRI)

(PRWEB) October 26, 2007 -- The London-based Pension and Population Research Institute Recently (25 October) launched 'Assessing the Damage', a 32-page report by its Director of Research, Patrick Carroll, into the demographic impact on society, and the consequences for women's health, of the 1967 Abortion Act.

Speaking at the launch at the Royal Society of Medicine in Wimpole Street, London, Mr Carroll said that the report discusses how national statistical data can be used to assess the effect of the 1967 Act.

"The 40th anniversary of the passing of the Abortion Act is a significant opportunity to re-assess the impact on society that has resulted from this legal and cultural change. Given that we live in such a politically correct age, for many my report is probably a rather inconvenient analysis, but it could however be a first step towards a restoration of the situation that will benefit many," Mr Carroll said.

Through statistical analysis and comparison Mr Carroll, who is an actuary and statistician by profession, looks at the impact of nearly seven million legally induced abortions over the last 40 years, abortion's bearing on family structure and its adverse health consequences.

"Statistics on abortion in England and Wales are unusually comprehensive and detailed by international standards and when combined with information from live birth data and mortality it is possible to estimate what I have called the 'Lost Generations' that are missing as a result of this legislation,"

Mr Carroll said.

The 'Lost Generations' are those who might have been born had they not been terminated as a result of the 1967 Act, some of whom could now be grandparents.

At a time of low birth rates and increasing infertility Mr Carroll says that the impact on actual population today of a still increasing abortion rate is serious. In his report he estimates that the United Kingdom's working age population has been reduced by nearly 7% since 1967. Had the Lost Generations been included in the working age population today, for example, National Insurance Contributions for men might on average be reduced by nearly £290.00 a year (£5.56 per week) or nearly £210.00 (£4.01 per week) for women.

"In the UK and Ireland there is good reason to be concerned about abortion and its impact in the continuing demographic context of late marriage and late childbearing. Our abortions are more damaging to health because so many are carried out on women before they give birth to live children," Mr Carroll said.

On an individual level, abortions are a greater threat to fertility and the physical and mental health of a woman who has yet to have children, than those that occur in a mother who has had a full-term pregnancy.

Patrick Carroll argues that there are national implications too, as live birth rates fall below replacement levels. In England, Wales and Scotland he argues that the abortion rate has contributed to the decline in Great Britain's birth rate.

However in Northern Ireland, where the 1967 Act does not apply, there has also been a considerable decline in the birth rate since 1968, but the prohibition on abortion has maintained fertility at a higher level than in Great Britain.

The Report also looks at the interaction between abortion and the decline of marriage, fertility, family size, family life and parenting. This includes its effect on women's health in relation to breast cancer. In his research Mr Carroll found abortion to be the best predictor of modern breast cancer trends.

Dr Joel Brind, Professor of Human Biology and Endocrinology at Baruch College of the City University of New York, came across the link between abortion and breast cancer in 1992. He was in London to support Mr Carroll at the launch of the report.

And so a vicious circle of poor health decisions is created.

Let's start with the recommended daily intake of food during pregnancy.

DURING PREGNANCY :

7 or more Fruits and Vegetables (3 fruits/4 vegetables)
Fruits and Vegetables high in vitamin C are the best. These include strawberries, melons, oranges, papaya, tomatoes, peppers, greens, and broccoli.

9 or more Whole Grain Products
A fortified breakfast cereal containing iron and folic acid is the best way to start each day. Enriched bread, rice, pasta, and any whole grain product are your other choices.

4 or more dairy products
Low-fat milk or non-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese are the obvious choices.

60 grams of protein (two or more 2-3 ounce portions of lean meat)
Other sources of protein include eggs, nuts, dried beans, and peas. Do not eat undercooked or uncooked meat or fish. (NO SUSHI) Do not eat deli luncheon meats

PREGNANCY NUTRITION FACTS

Fish

Some fish are higher in mercury content than others. Mercury can cause problems with your growing baby's brain and nervous system.

Fish eating limitations:
Limit your intake of fish to 12 ounces a week
Limit your intake of white tuna or tuna steak to 6 ounces a week

Weight

Calorie intake should only be increased by 300 a day during pregnancy for the average woman.
Weight gain should be around 28-40 pounds for women that are underweight at pregnancy.
Women that are overweight at pregnancy should gain only 15-25 pounds.
Weight gain should be around 2-4 pounds the first trimester and 3-4 pounds a month for the remaining time.
Excess weight gain is hard to lose after pregnancy because your body's fat increases up to one third during pregnancy.
Breast feeding burns 500 or more calories per day making it easier to lose weight.
Consult your health care provider for your specific healthy weight gain.

Vitamins and Minerals

Check the RDA chart for your needs during pregnancy.

Folic Acid is a special concern because a deficiency can lead to neural tube birth defects. Your multivitamin should contain 400 mcg of folic acid. Birth defects happen before you even know you're pregnant so always take a multivitamin with folic acid during child bearing age.

Vitamin C taken in doses over 500 mg/d can lead to your baby being born dependent on large quantities of vitamin C.

Iron is also of special concern because the average American diet does not provide enough iron during pregnancy. If your prenatal multivitamin does not contain enough iron your doctor will prescribe an additional supplement. Iron is needed for you and the baby to have healthy teeth, bones, and blood.

Water is often overlooked during pregnancy but it is vital for you and your baby. It carries the nutrients from your body to the baby and it helps prevent constipation, hemorrhoids, swelling and urinary tract infection. A minimum of 6 eight ounce glasses a day is required. Juice can count toward your 6 glasses but be careful of the added calories. Any drink containing caffeine actually reduces the fluid in your body and cannot count towards your 6 glasses.

Calcium is needed by you and the baby for strong teeth and bones. During pregnancy you need 1,000 mg/d and 1,300 mg/d if you are less than 18 years old.

Alcohol Consumption

There is no safe time or amount of alcohol to consume during pregnancy. No alcohol is the only way to insure the health of your baby. Alcohol you drink goes to your baby through the umbilical cord. Alcohol affects the baby's growth, the baby's brain, and can cause birth defects. These effects will remain with your unborn child for his/her entire life. FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders) is the name given to anyone affected by their mother's alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Problems learning, memory retention, and hearing are just a few things that alcohol can do to your child.

Caffeine

Caffeine in large quantities can lead to low weight babies. It also reduces the amount of vital water in your body. Although not yet proven, some studies suggest that it may harm the fetus. While not as dangerous as alcohol it should still be avoided.

Diabetics

Diabetics can have perfectly normal babies like every other woman. There are a just a few things you need to be careful of.
1. Keep your blood sugar under control for a minimum of 3 months before becoming pregnant.
2. Make sure you get enough folic acid at all times during your child bearing years (400 mcg/d).
3. Don't let your blood sugar get too high during pregnancy. This can lead to birth defects or your baby having blood sugar level problems

Most people dwell too much on the “rules” or accepted expectations for sites like Twitter. In this video, Michael Gray points out that there is no right way or wrong way to use Twitter. He says the only right way is when you are getting out of it what you want and what you’re putting into it.

Michael does give some basic tips that everyone could adopt and practice to build their reputation in the community. They are:

Most people prefer tweets that are not self-promoting. Michael says bigger brands have more flexibility in this regard, but even they should not take advantage of it. Twitter is about engagement and most self-promotions do not encourage it.

The value you receive from Twitter is ultimately determined when you identify your goals and work to meet them. It’s not about how many followers you acquire. What really matters is how many of those followers actually know who you are and are helping you meet your goals.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - the basics

Most people think of search engine optimization to improve their search engine rankings as being such a skilled task that, without putting a great deal of time and effort into it, it is simply beyond their capabilities. Wrong! Yes, improving search engine rankings in competitive topic areas does require a good deal of knowledge and expertise and search engine optimization experts are needed, but most websites aren't in very competitive areas. Many of them can achieve top rankings by applying just the search engine optimization basics - which can be learned in less than 30 minutes.

This article lays out the basics of search engine optimization. It can be well worthwhile trying them before paying an expert as, oftentimes, the basics are all that's needed.

NOTE: the SEO copywriting method (a.k.a. search engine optimization copywriting) applies these basics to a site's existing pages. It doesn't go into more advanced search engine optimization techniques that require more knowledge and expertise.
What is Search Engine Optimization?
Search engine optimization is the process of achieving top rankings in the search engines for a website's most relevant search terms. The most relevant search terms are the phrases that people are most likely to type into a search engine when looking for what the website has to offer. These are the search terms that it is essential to rank highly for, and these are the search terms that search engine optimization targets.

The first step is to choose the most suitable search terms for your site. Then allocate one or two of them to each suitable page within the site. One search term per page is preferable, but two per page is not so bad. Sometimes it is useful to split a largish page, that covers several closely related topics or several aspects of a topic, into two or more smaller pages so that a different search term can be targeted on each of them. Matching search terms to a page's content is essential.

NOTE: smaller pages are better than larger ones because it is easier to target a search term when there is less text on the page to dilute the focus.

Search Engine Optimization - the basics
Link structure within the site

An obvious, but sometimes overlooked, aspect of search engine optimization is to make sure that search engine spiders can actually find (crawl) all of the site's pages. If they can't find them, they sure as hell won't get spidered and indexed, and no amount of search engine optimization on them will help.

Some points to note
# Spiders can't see links that are accomplished by Javascript so, as far as search engines are concerned, they don't exist. Don't use them if you want spiders to follow your links.
# Google won't spider any URL that looks like it has a Session ID in it, so URLs with longish numbers in them must be avoided. These are usually dynamic URLs.
# Make sure that all pages link to at least one other page. Links to pages that don't link out are called "dangling links", and the reason to avoid them can be found here.
# It is good to structure the internal links so that targeted search terms are reinforced. E.g. organize the links so that a topic's sub-topic pages link to the topic page with the right link text (see below), and vice-versa.

Off-page elements

Link text

This is one of the two most important elements for good rankings. The link text can be on pages within the site or on other sites' pages. Either way, it is important. The target page's main search term should be included in the link text. When possible, don't use identical link text for every link that links to a page, but do include the target page's main search term in the link text.

Google attributes link text to the target page - as actually being on the target page, and it treats it's pseudo-presence as being an important element of the target page. Links carry even more weight if the text around them is concerned with the target page's topic and search term(s).

On-page elements

The Title tag

This is second of the two most important elements for good rankings. Make sure that the page's search term is contained in this tag, and place it as near to the front as is reasonable, whilst ensuring that it reads well. There's nothing wrong with placing the search term up front on its own, followed by a period; e.g. "Pagerank. Google's PageRank and how to make the most of it". The target search term is, of course, "PageRank". Obviously each page's Title tag should be different to the Title tags on the site's other pages.

The Description tag

Some search engines, such as Google, don't display the Description like they used to do but, even so, it should still be included in each page for those engines that do, and for the odd times when even Google displays it. Write an appealing description for the page and incorporate the page's search term into it at least once and, preferably, twice. Place one instance of it at the start or as near to the start as is reasonably possible.

The Keywords tag

The words in the Keywords tag were never treated as keywords by the search engines; they were treated as text on the page. The tag isn't as effective as it used to be but there is no reason to leave it out. So put plenty of relevant keywords into the tag and include the search term once at the front, and a second time further along the line. There is no need to seperate keywords and keyphrases with commas, as is often done, since the engines ignore commas.

The H tag

"n" is a number from 1 to 6; the biggest heading size being 1. H tags are given more weight than ordinary text and, the bigger the H size, the more weight it receives. So include the target search term in H tags at least once on the page, and two or three times if possible. Also, place the first H tag as near to the top of the page as possible.

Bold text
Bold text is given more weight than ordinary text but not as much as H tags. As much as is reasonable, enclose the search term in bold tags when it appears on the page.

Text
Use the search term as often as you can on the page whilst not detracting from the page's readability. Make sure that you use the term once or twice very early in the page's body text and as often as possible throughout. Reword small parts, and even add sentences, to make sure that the search term is well represented in the text.

In all probability, each word in the search term will be found on the page seperate from the search term itself. This is good. In fact, if they are not there on their own, add a few of them through the page.

Alt text

Include the search term in the alt text of all images on the page. Keep in mind that some systems such as Braille readers and speach synthesisers use the alt text, so you might want to make them usable whilst including the search term.

Summary

1. Select your main search terms.
2. Allocate each search term to a suitable existing page. Split some pages if necessary.
3. Organize the internal linkages and link text to suit the target search terms and their pages.
4. If possible, organize links from other sites to suit the target search terms and their pages.
5. Organize all the on-page elements to suit each page's target search term.

It is a text file which is 68 characters long and its file extension is “.COM” all virus scanners should recognize as virus.
Exploit
An exploit (security gap) is a computer program or script that takes advantage of a bug, glitch or vulnerability leading to privilege escalation or denial of service on a computer system. A form of an exploit for example are attacks from the Internet with the help of manipulated data packages. Programs can be infiltrated in order to obtain higher access.
Grayware
Grayware operates in a way similar to malware, but it is not spread to harm the users directly. It does not affect the system functionality as such. Mostly, information on the patterns of use is collected in order to either sell these data or to place advertisements systematically.
Hoaxes
The users have obtained virus alerts from the Internet for a few years and alerts against viruses in other networks that are supposed to spread via email. These alerts are spread per email with the request that they should be sent to the highest possible number of colleagues and to other users, in order to warn everyone against the "danger".
Honeypot
A honeypot is a service (program or server), which is installed in a network.
It has the function to monitor a network and to protocol attacks. This service is unknown to the legitime user - because of this reason he is never addressed. If an attacker examines a network for the weak points and uses the services which are offered by a Honeypot, it is protocolled and an alert sets off.
Keystroke logging
Keystroke logging is a diagnostic tool used in software development that captures the user's keystrokes. It can be useful to determine sources of error in computer systems and is sometimes used to measure employee productivity on certain clerical tasks. Like this, confidential and personal data, such as passwords or PINs, can be spied and sent to other computers via the Internet.
Macro viruses
Macro viruses are small programs that are written in the macro language of an application (e.g. WordBasic under WinWord 6.0) and that can normally only spread within documents of this application. Because of this, they are also called document viruses. In order to be active, they need that the corresponding applications are activated and that one of the infected macros has been executed. Unlike "normal" viruses, macro viruses do consequently not attack executable files but they do attack the documents of the corresponding host-application.
Polymorph viruses
Polymorph viruses are the real masters of disguise. They change their own programming codes - and are therefore very hard to detect.
Program viruses
A computer virus is a program that is capable to attach itself to other programs after being executed and cause an infection. Viruses multiply themselves unlike logic bombs and Trojans. In contrast to a worm, a virus always requires a program as host, where the virus deposits his virulent code. The program execution of the host itself is not changed as a rule.
Script viruses and worms
Such viruses are extremely easy to program and they can spread - if the required technology is on hand - within a few hours via email round the globe.
Script viruses and worms use a script language such as Javascript, VBScript etc. to infiltrate in other new scripts or to spread by activation of operating system functions. This frequently happens via email or through the exchange of files (documents).
A worm is a program that multiplies itself but that does not infect the host. Worms can consequently not form part of other program sequences. Worms are often the only possibility to infiltrate any kind of damaging programs on systems with restrictive security measures.
Spyware
Spyware are so called spy programs that intercept or take partial control of a computer's operation without the user's informed consent. Spyware is designed to expolit infected computers for commerical gain. Typical tactics furthering this goal include delivery of unsolicited pop-up advertisements. AntiVir is able to detect this kind of software with the category "ADSPY" or "adware-spyware".
Trojan horses (short Trojans)
Trojans are pretty common nowadays. We are talking about programs that pretend to have a particular function, but that show their real image after execution and carry out a different function that, in most cases, is destructive. Trojan horses cannot multiply themselves, which differenciates them from viruses and worms. Most of them have an interesting name (SEX.EXE or STARTME.EXE) with the intention to induce the user to start the Trojan. Immediately after execution they become active and can, for example, format the hard drive. A dropper is a special form of Trojan that 'drops' viruses, i.e. embeds viruses on the computer system.
Zombie
A Zombie-PC is a computer that is infected with malware programs and that enables hackers to abuse computers via remote control for criminal purposes. The affected PC, for example, can start Denial-of-Service- (DoS) attacks at command or send spam and phishing emails.

Google's PageRank Explained

What is PageRank?

PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. Google figures that when one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a vote for the other page. The more votes that are cast for a page, the more important the page must be. Also, the importance of the page that is casting the vote determines how important the vote itself is. Google calculates a page's importance from the votes cast for it. How important each vote is is taken into account when a page's PageRank is calculated.
PageRank is Google's way of deciding a page's importance. It matters because it is one of the factors that determines a page's ranking in the search results. It isn't the only factor that Google uses to rank pages, but it is an important one.

From here on in, we'll occasionally refer to PageRank as "PR".

Notes:
Not all links are counted by Google. For instance, they filter out links from known link farms. Some links can cause a site to be penalized by Google. They rightly figure that webmasters cannot control which sites link to their sites, but they can control which sites they link out to. For this reason, links into a site cannot harm the site, but links from a site can be harmful if they link to penalized sites. So be careful which sites you link to. If a site has PR0, it is usually a penalty, and it would be unwise to link to it.

How is PageRank calculated?

To calculate the PageRank for a page, all of its inbound links are taken into account. These are links from within the site and links from outside the site.

PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + ... + PR(tn)/C(tn))

That's the equation that calculates a page's PageRank. It's the original one that was published when PageRank was being developed, and it is probable that Google uses a variation of it but they aren't telling us what it is. It doesn't matter though, as this equation is good enough.

In the equation 't1 - tn' are pages linking to page A, 'C' is the number of outbound links that a page has and 'd' is a damping factor, usually set to 0.85.

We can think of it in a simpler way:-

a page's PageRank = 0.15 + 0.85 * (a "share" of the PageRank of every page that links to it)

"share" = the linking page's PageRank divided by the number of outbound links on the page.

A page "votes" an amount of PageRank onto each page that it links to. The amount of PageRank that it has to vote with is a little less than its own PageRank value (its own value * 0.85). This value is shared equally between all the pages that it links to.

From this, we could conclude that a link from a page with PR4 and 5 outbound links is worth more than a link from a page with PR8 and 100 outbound links. The PageRank of a page that links to yours is important but the number of links on that page is also important. The more links there are on a page, the less PageRank value your page will receive from it.

If the PageRank value differences between PR1, PR2,.....PR10 were equal then that conclusion would hold up, but many people believe that the values between PR1 and PR10 (the maximum) are set on a logarithmic scale, and there is very good reason for believing it. Nobody outside Google knows for sure one way or the other, but the chances are high that the scale is logarithmic, or similar. If so, it means that it takes a lot more additional PageRank for a page to move up to the next PageRank level that it did to move up from the previous PageRank level. The result is that it reverses the previous conclusion, so that a link from a PR8 page that has lots of outbound links is worth more than a link from a PR4 page that has only a few outbound links.

Whichever scale Google uses, we can be sure of one thing. A link from another site increases our site's PageRank. Just remember to avoid links from link farms.

Note that when a page votes its PageRank value to other pages, its own PageRank is not reduced by the value that it is voting. The page doing the voting doesn't give away its PageRank and end up with nothing. It isn't a transfer of PageRank. It is simply a vote according to the page's PageRank value. It's like a shareholders meeting where each shareholder votes according to the number of shares held, but the shares themselves aren't given away. Even so, pages do lose some PageRank indirectly, as we'll see later.

Ok so far? Good. Now we'll look at how the calculations are actually done.

For a page's calculation, its existing PageRank (if it has any) is abandoned completely and a fresh calculation is done where the page relies solely on the PageRank "voted" for it by its current inbound links, which may have changed since the last time the page's PageRank was calculated.

The equation shows clearly how a page's PageRank is arrived at. But what isn't immediately obvious is that it can't work if the calculation is done just once. Suppose we have 2 pages, A and B, which link to each other, and neither have any other links of any kind. This is what happens:-

Step 1: Calculate page A's PageRank from the value of its inbound links

Page A now has a new PageRank value. The calculation used the value of the inbound link from page B. But page B has an inbound link (from page A) and its new PageRank value hasn't been worked out yet, so page A's new PageRank value is based on inaccurate data and can't be accurate.

Step 2: Calculate page B's PageRank from the value of its inbound links

Page B now has a new PageRank value, but it can't be accurate because the calculation used the new PageRank value of the inbound link from page A, which is inaccurate.

It's a Catch 22 situation. We can't work out A's PageRank until we know B's PageRank, and we can't work out B's PageRank until we know A's PageRank.

Now that both pages have newly calculated PageRank values, can't we just run the calculations again to arrive at accurate values? No. We can run the calculations again using the new values and the results will be more accurate, but we will always be using inaccurate values for the calculations, so the results will always be inaccurate.

The problem is overcome by repeating the calculations many times. Each time produces slightly more accurate values. In fact, total accuracy can never be achieved because the calculations are always based on inaccurate values. 40 to 50 iterations are sufficient to reach a point where any further iterations wouldn't produce enough of a change to the values to matter. This is precisiely what Google does at each update, and it's the reason why the updates take so long.

One thing to bear in mind is that the results we get from the calculations are proportions. The figures must then be set against a scale (known only to Google) to arrive at each page's actual PageRank. Even so, we can use the calculations to channel the PageRank within a site around its pages so that certain pages receive a higher proportion of it than others.

NOTE:
You may come across explanations of PageRank where the same equation is stated but the result of each iteration of the calculation is added to the page's existing PageRank. The new value (result + existing PageRank) is then used when sharing PageRank with other pages. These explanations are wrong for the following reasons:-

1. They quote the same, published equation - but then change it

from PR(A) = (1-d) + d(......) to PR(A) = PR(A) + (1-d) + d(......)

It isn't correct, and it isn't necessary.

2. We will be looking at how to organize links so that certain pages end up with a larger proportion of the PageRank than others. Adding to the page's existing PageRank through the iterations produces different proportions than when the equation is used as published. Since the addition is not a part of the published equation, the results are wrong and the proportioning isn't accurate.

According to the published equation, the page being calculated starts from scratch at each iteration. It relies solely on its inbound links. The 'add to the existing PageRank' idea doesn't do that, so its results are necessarily wrong.

Internal linking

Fact: A website has a maximum amount of PageRank that is distributed between its pages by internal links.

The maximum PageRank in a site equals the number of pages in the site * 1. The maximum is increased by inbound links from other sites and decreased by outbound links to other sites. We are talking about the overall PageRank in the site and not the PageRank of any individual page. You don't have to take my word for it. You can reach the same conclusion by using a pencil and paper and the equation.

Fact: The maximum amount of PageRank in a site increases as the number of pages in the site increases.

The more pages that a site has, the more PageRank it has. Again, by using a pencil and paper and the equation, you can come to the same conclusion. Bear in mind that the only pages that count are the ones that Google knows about.

Fact: By linking poorly, it is possible to fail to reach the site's maximum PageRank, but it is not possible to exceed it.

Poor internal linkages can cause a site to fall short of its maximum but no kind of internal link structure can cause a site to exceed it. The only way to increase the maximum is to add more inbound links and/or increase the number of pages in the site.

Cautions: Whilst I thoroughly recommend creating and adding new pages to increase a site's total PageRank so that it can be channeled to specific pages, there are certain types of pages that should not be added. These are pages that are all identical or very nearly identical and are known as cookie-cutters. Google considers them to be spam and they can trigger an alarm that causes the pages, and possibly the entire site, to be penalized. Pages full of good content are a must.

What can we do with this 'overall' PageRank?

We are going to look at some example calculations to see how a site's PageRank can be manipulated, but before doing that, I need to point out that a page will be included in the Google index only if one or more pages on the web link to it. That's according to Google. If a page is not in the Google index, any links from it can't be included in the calculations.

For the examples, we are going to ignore that fact, mainly because other 'Pagerank Explained' type documents ignore it in the calculations, and it might be confusing when comparing documents. The calculator operates in two modes:- Simple and Real. In Simple mode, the calculations assume that all pages are in the Google index, whether or not any other pages link to them. In Real mode the calculations disregard unlinked-to pages. These examples show the results as calculated in Simple mode. pagerank, page rank

Let's consider a 3 page site (pages A, B and C) with no links coming in from the outside. We will allocate each page an initial PageRank of 1, although it makes no difference whether we start each page with 1, 0 or 99. Apart from a few millionths of a PageRank point, after many iterations the end result is always the same. Starting with 1 requires fewer iterations for the PageRanks to converge to a suitable result than when starting with 0 or any other number. You may want to use a pencil and paper to follow this or you can follow it with the calculator.

The site's maximum PageRank is the amount of PageRank in the site. In this case, we have 3 pages so the site's maximum is 3.

At the moment, none of the pages link to any other pages and none link to them. If you make the calculation once for each page, you'll find that each of them ends up with a PageRank of 0.15. No matter how many iterations you run, each page's PageRank remains at 0.15. The total PageRank in the site = 0.45, whereas it could be 3. The site is seriously wasting most of its potential PageRank.

Example 1 pagerank, page rank

Now begin again with each page being allocated PR1. Link page A to page B and run the calculations for each page. We end up with:-
Page A = 0.15
Page B = 1
Page C = 0.15

Page A has "voted" for page B and, as a result, page B's PageRank has increased. This is looking good for page B, but it's only 1 iteration - we haven't taken account of the Catch 22 situation. Look at what happens to the figures after more iterations:-

After 100 iterations the figures are:-
Page A = 0.15
Page B = 0.2775
Page C = 0.15

It still looks good for page B but nowhere near as good as it did. These figures are more realistic. The total PageRank in the site is now 0.5775 - slightly better but still only a fraction of what it could be.

NOTE:
Technically, these particular results are incorrect because of the special treatment that Google gives to dangling links, but they serve to demonstrate the simple calculation.

Example 2 pagerank, page rank

Try this linkage. Link all pages to all pages. Each page starts with PR1 again. This produces:-
Page A = 1
Page B = 1
Page C = 1

Now we've achieved the maximum. No matter how many iterations are run, each page always ends up with PR1. The same results occur by linking in a loop. E.g. A to B, B to C and C to D. View this in the calculator.

This has demonstrated that, by poor linking, it is quite easy to waste PageRank and by good linking, we can achieve a site's full potential. But we don't particularly want all the site's pages to have an equal share. We want one or more pages to have a larger share at the expense of others. The kinds of pages that we might want to have the larger shares are the index page, hub pages and pages that are optimized for certain search terms. We have only 3 pages, so we'll channel the PageRank to the index page - page A. It will serve to show the idea of channeling.

Example 3 pagerank, page rank

Now try this. Link page A to both B and C. Also link pages B and C to A. Starting with PR1 all round, after 1 iteration the results are:-
Page A = 1.85
Page B = 0.575
Page C = 0.575

and after 100 iterations, the results are:-
Page A = 1.459459
Page B = 0.7702703
Page C = 0.7702703

In both cases the total PageRank in the site is 3 (the maximum) so none is being wasted. Also in both cases you can see that page A has a much larger proportion of the PageRank than the other 2 pages. This is because pages B and C are passing PageRank to A and not to any other pages. We have channeled a large proportion of the site's PageRank to where we wanted it.

Example 4 pagerank, page rank

Finally, keep the previous links and add a link from page C to page B. Start again with PR1 all round. After 1 iteration:-
Page A = 1.425
Page B = 1
Page C = 0.575

By comparison to the 1 iteration figures in the previous example, page A has lost some PageRank, page B has gained some and page C stayed the same. Page C now shares its "vote" between A and B. Previously A received all of it. That's why page A has lost out and why page B has gained. and after 100 iterations:-
Page A = 1.298245
Page B = 0.9999999
Page C = 0.7017543

When the dust has settled, page C has lost a little PageRank because, having now shared its vote between A and B, instead of giving it all to A, A has less to give to C in the A-->C link. So adding an extra link from a page causes the page to lose PageRank indirectly if any of the pages that it links to return the link. If the pages that it links to don't return the link, then no PageRank loss would have occured. To make it more complicated, if the link is returned even indirectly (via a page that links to a page that links to a page etc), the page will lose a little PageRank. This isn't really important with internal links, but it does matter when linking to pages outside the site.

Example 5: new pages

Adding new pages to a site is an important way of increasing a site's total PageRank because each new page will add an average of 1 to the total. Once the new pages have been added, their new PageRank can be channeled to the important pages. We'll use the calculator to demonstrate these.

Let's add 3 new pages to Example 3 [view]. Three new pages but they don't do anything for us yet. The small increase in the Total, and the new pages' 0.15, are unrealistic as we shall see. So let's link them into the site.

Link each of the new pages to the important page, page A [view]. Notice that the Total PageRank has doubled, from 3 (without the new pages) to 6. Notice also that page A's PageRank has almost doubled.

There is one thing wrong with this model. The new pages are orphans. They wouldn't get into Google's index, so they wouldn't add any PageRank to the site and they wouldn't pass any PageRank to page A. They each need to be linked to from at least one other page. If page A is the important page, the best page to put the links on is, surprisingly, page A [view]. You can play around with the links but, from page A's point of view, there isn't a better place for them.

It is not a good idea for one page to link to a large number of pages so, if you are adding many new pages, spread the links around. The chances are that there is more than one important page in a site, so it is usually suitable to spread the links to and from the new pages. You can use the calculator to experiment with mini-models of a site to find the best links that produce the best results for its important pages.

Examples summary

You can see that, by organising the internal links, it is possible to channel a site's PageRank to selected pages. Internal links can be arranged to suit a site's PageRank needs, but it is only useful if Google knows about the pages, so do try to ensure that Google spiders them.

Inbound and Outbound links

Examples of these could be given but it is probably clearer to read about them (below) and to 'play' with them in the calculator.

Questions

When a page has several links to another page, are all the links counted?

E.g. if page A links once to page B and 3 times to page C, does page C receive 3/4 of page A's shareable PageRank?

The PageRank concept is that a page casts votes for one or more other pages. Nothing is said in the original PageRank document about a page casting more than one vote for a single page. The idea seems to be against the PageRank concept and would certainly be open to manipulation by unrealistically proportioning votes for target pages. E.g. if an outbound link, or a link to an unimportant page, is necessary, add a bunch of links to an important page to minimize the effect.

Since we are unlikely to get a definitive answer from Google, it is reasonable to assume that a page can cast only one vote for another page, and that additional votes for the same page are not counted.

When a page links to itself, is the link counted?

Again, the concept is that pages cast votes for other pages. Nothing is said in the original document about pages casting votes for themselves. The idea seems to be against the concept and, also, it would be another way to manipulate the results. So, for those reasons, it is reasonable to assume that a page can't vote for itself, and that such links are not counted.

Dangling links
pagerank, page rank "Dangling links are simply links that point to any page with no outgoing links. They affect the model because it is not clear where their weight should be distributed, and there are a large number of them. Often these dangling links are simply pages that we have not downloaded yet..........Because dangling links do not affect the ranking of any other page directly, we simply remove them from the system until all the PageRanks are calculated. After all the PageRanks are calculated they can be added back in without affecting things significantly." - extract from the original PageRank paper by Google’s founders, Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page.

A dangling link is a link to a page that has no links going from it, or a link to a page that Google hasn't indexed. In both cases Google removes the links shortly after the start of the calculations and reinstates them shortly before the calculations are finished. In this way, their effect on the PageRank of other pages in minimal.

The results shown in Example 1 (right diag.) are wrong because page B has no links going from it, and so the link from page A to page B is dangling and would be removed from the calculations. The results of the calculations would show all three pages as having 0.15.

It may suit site functionality to link to pages that have no links going from them without losing any PageRank from the other pages but it would be waste of potential PageRank. Take a look at this example. The site's potential is 5 because it has 5 pages, but without page E linked in, the site only has 4.15.

Link page A to page E and click Calculate. Notice that the site's total has gone down very significantly. But, because the new link is dangling and would be removed from the calculations, we can ignore the new total and assume the previous 4.15 to be true. That's the effect of functionally useful, dangling links in the site. There's no overall PageRank loss.

However, some of the site's potential total is still being wasted, so link Page E back to Page A and click Calculate. Now we have the maximum PageRank that is possible with 5 pages. Nothing is being wasted.

Although it may be functionally good to link to pages within the site without those pages linking out again, it is bad for PageRank. It is pointless wasting PageRank unnecessarily, so always make sure that every page in the site links out to at least one other page in the site.

Inbound links

Inbound links (links into the site from the outside) are one way to increase a site's total PageRank. The other is to add more pages. Where the links come from doesn't matter. Google recognizes that a webmaster has no control over other sites linking into a site, and so sites are not penalized because of where the links come from. There is an exception to this rule but it is rare and doesn't concern this article. It isn't something that a webmaster can accidentally do.

The linking page's PageRank is important, but so is the number of links going from that page. For instance, if you are the only link from a page that has a lowly PR2, you will receive an injection of 0.15 + 0.85(2/1) = 1.85 into your site, whereas a link from a PR8 page that has another 99 links from it will increase your site's PageRank by 0.15 + 0.85(7/100) = 0.2095. Clearly, the PR2 link is much better - or is it? See here for a probable reason why this is not the case.

Once the PageRank is injected into your site, the calculations are done again and each page's PageRank is changed. Depending on the internal link structure, some pages' PageRank is increased, some are unchanged but no pages lose any PageRank.

It is beneficial to have the inbound links coming to the pages to which you are channeling your PageRank. A PageRank injection to any other page will be spread around the site through the internal links. The important pages will receive an increase, but not as much of an increase as when they are linked to directly. The page that receives the inbound link, makes the biggest gain.

It is easy to think of our site as being a small, self-contained network of pages. When we do the PageRank calculations we are dealing with our small network. If we make a link to another site, we lose some of our network's PageRank, and if we receive a link, our network's PageRank is added to. But it isn't like that. For the PageRank calculations, there is only one network - every page that Google has in its index. Each iteration of the calculation is done on the entire network and not on individual websites.

Because the entire network is interlinked, and every link and every page plays its part in each iteration of the calculations, it is impossible for us to calculate the effect of inbound links to our site with any realistic accuracy.

Outbound links

Outbound links are a drain on a site's total PageRank. They leak PageRank. To counter the drain, try to ensure that the links are reciprocated. Because of the PageRank of the pages at each end of an external link, and the number of links out from those pages, reciprocal links can gain or lose PageRank. You need to take care when choosing where to exchange links.

When PageRank leaks from a site via a link to another site, all the pages in the internal link structure are affected. (This doesn't always show after just 1 iteration). The page that you link out from makes a difference to which pages suffer the most loss. Without a program to perform the calculations on specific link structures, it is difficult to decide on the right page to link out from, but the generalization is to link from the one with the lowest PageRank.

Many websites need to contain some outbound links that are nothing to do with PageRank. Unfortunately, all 'normal' outbound links leak PageRank. But there are 'abnormal' ways of linking to other sites that don't result in leaks. PageRank is leaked when Google recognizes a link to another site. The answer is to use links that Google doesn't recognize or count. These include form actions and links contained in javascript code.

Form actions
A form's 'action' attribute does not need to be the url of a form parsing script. It can point to any html page on any site. Try it.

To be really sneaky, the action attribute could be in some javascript code rather than in the form tag, and the javascript code could be loaded from a 'js' file stored in a directory that is barred to Google's spider by the robots.txt file.

Like the form action, it is sneaky to load the javascript code, which contains the urls, from a seperate 'js' file, and sneakier still if the file is stored in a directory that is barred to googlebot by the robots.txt file.

The "rel" attribute
As of 18th January 2005, Google, together with other search engines, is recognising a new attribute to the anchor tag. The attribute is "rel", and it is used as follows:-

The attribute tells Google to ignore the link completely. The link won't help the target page's PageRank, and it won't help its rankings. It is as though the link doesn't exist. With this attribute, there is no longer any need for javascript, forms, or any other method of hiding links from Google.

So how much additional PageRank do we need to move up the toolbar?
First, let me explain in more detail why the values shown in the Google toolbar are not the actual PageRank figures. According to the equation, and to the creators of Google, the billions of pages on the web average out to a PageRank of 1.0 per page. So the total PageRank on the web is equal to the number of pages on the web * 1, which equals a lot of PageRank spread around the web.

The Google toolbar range is from 1 to 10. (They sometimes show 0, but that figure isn't believed to be a PageRank calculation result). What Google does is divide the full range of actual PageRanks on the web into 10 parts - each part is represented by a value as shown in the toolbar. So the toolbar values only show what part of the overall range a page's PageRank is in, and not the actual PageRank itself. The numbers in the toolbar are just labels.

Whether or not the overall range is divided into 10 equal parts is a matter for debate - Google aren't saying. But because it is much harder to move up a toolbar point at the higher end than it is at the lower end, many people (including me) believe that the divisions are based on a logarithmic scale, or something very similar, rather than the equal divisions of a linear scale.

Let's assume that it is a logarithmic, base 10 scale, and that it takes 10 properly linked new pages to move a site's important page up 1 toolbar point. It will take 100 new pages to move it up another point, 1000 new pages to move it up one more, 10,000 to the next, and so on. That's why moving up at the lower end is much easier that at the higher end.

In reality, the base is unlikely to be 10. Some people think it is around the 5 or 6 mark, and maybe even less. Even so, it still gets progressively harder to move up a toolbar point at the higher end of the scale.

Note that as the number of pages on the web increases, so does the total PageRank on the web, and as the total PageRank increases, the positions of the divisions in the overall scale must change. As a result, some pages drop a toolbar point for no 'apparent' reason. If the page's actual PageRank was only just above a division in the scale, the addition of new pages to the web would cause the division to move up slightly and the page would end up just below the division. Google's index is always increasing and they re-evaluate each of the pages on more or less a monthly basis. It's known as the "Google dance". When the dance is over, some pages will have dropped a toolbar point. A number of new pages might be all that is needed to get the point back after the next dance.

The toolbar value is a good indicator of a page's PageRank but it only indicates that a page is in a certain range of the overall scale. One PR5 page could be just above the PR5 division and another PR5 page could be just below the PR6 division - almost a whole division (toolbar point) between them.

Tips
Domain names and Filenames

To a spider, www.domain.com/, domain.com/, www.domain.com/index.html and domain.com/index.html are different urls and, therefore, different pages. Surfers arrive at the site's home page whichever of the urls are used, but spiders see them as individual urls, and it makes a difference when working out the PageRank. It is better to standardize the url you use for the site's home page. Otherwise each url can end up with a different PageRank, whereas all of it should have gone to just one url.

If you think about it, how can a spider know the filename of the page that it gets back when requesting www.domain.com/ ? It can't. The filename could be index.html, index.htm, index.php, default.html, etc. The spider doesn't know. If you link to index.html within the site, the spider could compare the 2 pages but that seems unlikely. So they are 2 urls and each receives PageRank from inbound links. Standardizing the home page's url ensures that the Pagerank it is due isn't shared with ghost urls.

Example: Go to my UK Holidays and UK Holiday Accommodation site - how's that for a nice piece of link text ;). Notice that the url in the browser's address bar contains "www.". If you have the Google Toolbar installed, you will see that the page has PR5. Now remove the "www." part of the url and get the page again. This time it has PR1, and yet they are the same page. Actually, the PageRank is for the unseen frameset page.

When this article was first written, the non-www URL had PR4 due to using different versions of the link URLs within the site. It had the effect of sharing the page's PageRank between the 2 pages (the 2 versions) and, therefore, between the 2 sites. That's not the best way to do it. Since then, I've tidied up the internal linkages and got the non-www version down to PR1 so that the PageRank within the site mostly stays in the "www." version, but there must be a site somewhere that links to it without the "www." that's causing the PR1.

Imagine the page, www.domain.com/index.html. The index page contains links to several relative urls; e.g. products.html and details.html. The spider sees those urls as www.domain.com/products.html and www.domain.com/details.html. Now let's add an absolute url for another page, only this time we'll leave out the "www." part - domain.com/anotherpage.html. This page links back to the index.html page, so the spider sees the index pages as domain.com/index.html. Although it's the same index page as the first one, to a spider, it is a different page because it's on a different domain. Now look what happens. Each of the relative urls on the index page is also different because it belongs to the domain.com/ domain. Consequently, the link stucture is wasting a site's potential PageRank by spreading it between ghost pages.

Adding new pages

There is a possible negative effect of adding new pages. Take a perfectly normal site. It has some inbound links from other sites and its pages have some PageRank. Then a new page is added to the site and is linked to from one or more of the existing pages. The new page will, of course, aquire PageRank from the site's existing pages. The effect is that, whilst the total PageRank in the site is increased, one or more of the existing pages will suffer a PageRank loss due to the new page making gains. Up to a point, the more new pages that are added, the greater is the loss to the existing pages. With large sites, this effect is unlikely to be noticed but, with smaller ones, it probably would.

So, although adding new pages does increase the total PageRank within the site, some of the site's pages will lose PageRank as a result. The answer is to link new pages is such a way within the site that the important pages don't suffer, or add sufficient new pages to make up for the effect (that can sometimes mean adding a large number of new pages), or better still, get some more inbound links.

Miscellaneous

The Google toolbar
If you have the Google toolbar installed in your browser, you will be used to seeing each page's PageRank as you browse the web. But all isn't always as it seems. Many pages that Google displays the PageRank for haven't been indexed in Google and certainly don't have any PageRank in their own right. What is happening is that one or more pages on the site have been indexed and a PageRank has been calculated. The PageRank figure for the site's pages that haven't been indexed is allocated on the fly - just for your toolbar. The PageRank itself doesn't exist.

It's important to know this so that you can avoid exchanging links with pages that really don't have any PageRank of their own. Before making exchanges, search for the page on Google to make sure that it is indexed.

Sub-directories
Some people believe that Google drops a page's PageRank by a value of 1 for each sub-directory level below the root directory. E.g. if the value of pages in the root directory is generally around 4, then pages in the next directory level down will be generally around 3, and so on down the levels. Other people (including me) don't accept that at all. Either way, because some spiders tend to avoid deep sub-directories, it is generally considered to be beneficial to keep directory structures shallow (directories one or two levels below the root).

ODP and Yahoo!
It used to be thought that Google gave a Pagerank boost to sites that are listed in the Yahoo! and ODP (a.k.a. DMOZ) directories, but these days general opinion is that they don't. There is certainly a PageRank gain for sites that are listed in those directories, but the reason for it is now thought to be this:-

Google spiders the directories just like any other site and their pages have decent PageRank and so they are good inbound links to have. In the case of the ODP, Google's directory is a copy of the ODP directory. Each time that sites are added and dropped from the ODP, they are added and dropped from Google's directory when they next update it. The entry in Google's directory is yet another good, PageRank boosting, inbound link. Also, the ODP data is used for searches on a myriad of websites - more inbound links!

Listings in the ODP are free but, because sites are reviewed by hand, it can take quite a long time to get in. The sooner a working site is submitted, the better. For tips on submitting to DMOZ, see this this DMOZ article.

Learning basic HTML to write a webpage.

Here you will learn to make a basic web page in your notepad or word processor.

As you may have learned previously, html stands for Hypertext Markup Language. It is what your browser looks for to display a webpage the way the webdesigner intended it to look, and is a series of tags that tells the
browser where to display what. They are commands that you control, just like telling a dog to sit. They are in plain English and an example is if you want to make text bold, you tell it to be if you want it to be in italics, you tell it to be , you may even abbreviate some of them like or

All tags that are opened must correspondingly
be closed, just as if you are writing a quoted statement with those "inverted commas".

A tag is closed this way therefore we open a new tag and close the tag

Different tags call different functions. A full list of html tags and their functions is provided here.

Let's get straight into making your first page. Open up your notepad program and follow these step to make your first basic page in html.
(To open notepad, click on start, programs, accessories, notepad.)

To begin a webpage you must first tell the browser that it is indeed a html document, so you begin your webpage with the opening tag of and end the page by closing the tag.

Everything else that you put into a webpage goes in between these 2 tags

So to begin with, our page looks like this:

Hint, You can use capital OR lower case letters within your tags but DO NOT mix capitals with lower case.

The Head

Directly under the comes the The head is for the browsers use and shows such things as the page title, the designers name, keywords and a detailed description of what can be found on the page. The contents of the head are not visible to visitors. The tags within the head are called "Meta Tags" which if you haven't already heard mention of them, you will certainly hear a lot of as your internet experience grows. *smiles*

The easiest way to write your meta tags is to copy and paste an existing set of meta tags from an established page and change the wording within to suit your needs. Or another alternative is to go to someone who has a Meta Tag Generator and use that service. There is one you can freely use here.META TAG GENERATOR

In this example we will only add the title of the page. We will deal with meta tags in greater detail later on in the html tutorial series.

Now our page would look like this. Notice how the is placed between both tags

The Body

Within the body is where you place all of the things you want your visitors to see. Your background, text, images and other effects. This begins with the tag and you usually put in a background, which can be enclosed within the body tag. This page has a white background. The html will be :

"#FFFFFF"> This is the hexidecimal color code for browser safe colors. This code is for white.

Now we need to put in an opening statement, something like Welcome to My Website. This is done byadding a heading command or what I prefer to use FONT SIZE.

In this example we will use the font size 5 and we will center the welcome message.

Font is the typing letters.
You are giving the commands to the browser to do what you want it to do.

Next we will add some text and to begin we need to tell the browser it is the start of a new paragraph and where to place the text. This is the html to do that:

Starting right now, plan when you will get your salary, how much its amount, and when you will spend your money, what the posts and how much the amount of expenses. The plan called Budget.

In example, you will receive this much on your salary on 27th, then from that amount you will use this much for this expense, that amount for that expense, and so on. So, if you make a budget first, you will detect on the first place whether there will be deficit or not in the middle of the month. If yes, you can revise the budget to avoid deficit.

Composing budget is very easy. If you have already known the amount of average income and expense every month, you could also predict how much income and expense for the next coming months.

Budget function

Many people feels uncomfortable to draw up and have budget. They think budget is the same with restrain their shopping desire.

Thereby, it would be easier to make another plan froward, because you have already known that every end of the month you surely have discrepancy of Rp250,000, which can be used for another purpose.

However, sometimes people, although have already made up a simple budget, is still unable to meet their budget. If he, i.e. allocated Rp500,000 per month for shopping, the figure could expand to Rp750,000.

This can be prevented with a harder system, namely 'envelope system'. If you have already drawn up a budget, you should allocate the amount right away according to each post. Each post is represented by one envelope. If the money in the envelope is empty, you don't have to try opening the other envelopes, because you have already known that budget for the related post has touched its limit. Envelope system is a little complicated, but perhaps it is the sacrifice that you should doso that you will not experience deficit. The most important, your expense now is more controllable.

I tend to start blabbering more technical stuff than needed (brought up as an old school web coder), but you are welcome to comment below if you have any questions regarding the podcast.

Bing Add a Site Tool Is Down

Microsoft has confirmed an issue related to its tool for webmasters, indicating that the addition of new websites to its decision/search engine is not functioning momentarily. According to the Redmond company, the Add a Site option is not working for various localized versions of Bing. I have just tried it and can confirm that webmasters that have Bing configured in accordance with their specific location won’t be able introduce new websites for Bing to start indexing. Even after I changed the location settings to the United
States, I was still unable to add a website.

“As some of you may have experienced, our “add a site” page has been unavailable in some locals for the past several days. This is not a site-wide or even global issue. Unfortunately, this happened due to an update that uncovered a bug in the original code which caused us to disable the page in one of our Data Centers,” revealed Brett Yount, Bing Webmaster Center.

As a general rule of search engine optimization (SEO) webmasters introduce newly launched websites into search engines in order to streamline the indexing process. Ensuring that a certain site is indexed means enabling end users to easily find it via queries introduced into search engines. Of course, SEO is actually immensely more complicated than simply making sure that websites are indexed. However, adding a website to a search engine is perhaps the most common interaction task that webmasters must perform with services offered by Bing, Yahoo, Google and others.

“Good news is, we are testing a fix and will be releasing it to production as soon as we are sure it will not cause further complications. I will [provide an] update as soon as I receive word that the fix is in production. On behalf of all of us here at Bing, we would like to extend our apologies and thank you for your continued patience,” Yount added.

Bing in a Can: All Natural

Looking to get a taste of all the nuances that Microsoft’s Bing has to offer? You could be surprised to find out that you might need taste buds in order to experience all that Bing has to offer. Especially when it comes down to the all-natural taste of Bing, which Microsoft managed to capture in a can. As you can see in the images accompanying this article, courtesy of Eric Ligman, Global Partner Experience Lead Microsoft Worldwide Partner Group, the Redmond-based company is offering beverages rebranded with the same brand that killed off Live Search.

Microsoft’s decision/search engine might still need some juice in order to fully take on Google, maybe after a squeeze of Yahoo, but fact is that Bing looks perfectly capable of quenching your thirst. At the end of July 2009, the Redmond-based company announced that Bing would be the search engine to power Yahoo search on all Yahoo web properties. The Bing and Yahoo mix, shaken not stirred, is designed to make Google look like faucet water, and to gain additional traction among users, implicitly increasing its share of the search and advertising markets.

“As you can see, zero calories, no sodium, all natural, no sweeteners, zero fat, no cholesterol, and zero carbs! Truly a healthy and refreshing addition to anyone’s day. (…) Be sure to turn to Bing for all of your online search, directions, traffic, shopping, and more for the quickest, most satisfying, refreshing, and healthy way to get what and where you are looking for,” Ligman noted.

Microsoft is of course not at the first initiative to rebrand beverages with monikers specific of its software products. Some users might remember that Windows Vista was also available for Microsoft employees in the coolers on the Redmond campus. And chances are that if you don’t work for Microsoft, you won’t find Bing on store shelves.

“While all of the facts regarding the online and search capabilities of Bing are legitimate, Bing itself is not a refreshment beverage; however, using Bing’s online capabilities is cool and can absolutely leave you with a refreshed sensation by getting the things you want, how you want them, quicker and more efficiently. The can above is one that if you happen to visit a Microsoft campus near you, you will find in the coolers with actual sparkling water inside. They are a great collectors item for all of you Bing fans out there though,” Ligman added.

Bing Maps Integration Kit for PHP Available

The official label of the PHP Toolkit for Bing Maps Web Service might just be descriptive enough to give away the functionality. But if you haven’t figured it out from just the name, the toolkit is designed to allow developers building PHP websites to seamlessly integrate Bing Maps. Chris Pendleton, Virtual Earth technical evangelist for Microsoft, indicated that the PHP Toolkit for Bing Maps Web Service was essentially designed to compensate the shortcomings of the official Bing Maps MSDN documentation, which doesn’t offer a streamlined way for converting C# to PHP.

“Thanks to the Microsoft Interoperability Team we now have a PHP Toolkit for Bing Maps Web Service. It’s not officially supported by the product group, so don’t cry to me because it doesn’t work the way you want it to, cry to the team who made the PHP Toolkit for Bing Maps Web Service. You could also thank them for saving you days of development and most of the hair on your head,” Pendleton added.

The Virtual Earth Integration Kit for PHP project is hosted on CodePlex, and there are two separate downloads for developers. In the end, devs looking to integrate Bing Maps into their PHP websites will have to either work with an SQL database version 2005 or 2008 in which case they should choose the vekit_sqlexpress.zip package, or opt for the source code and user documentation of the vekit_mysql.zip in case the integration relies on a MySQL database.

“This project demonstrates how PHP applications can take advantage [of] Microsoft's Virtual Earth. The Virtual Earth API is exposed through a Javascript library making it straightforward to integrate into any web based application. The project integrates Microsoft's Virtual Earth Web Service and API to embed a map into a PHP application. Web site users can add their location to the map and the map displays a pin for every user location stored in the database. The solution package includes the code needed to embed a Virtual Earth map in a PHP web page. Step by step instructions are included to help PHP developers set up a database and appropriate table to store user submitted locations,” Pendleton said.

Bing Swallowing Live Search Bit by Bit

Live Search is dying, one piece at a time – a mute death, presented by Microsoft as an evolution of its search engine. The Redmond company introduced Bing, formerly codenamed Kumo, on May 28, 2009, and it continues to roll out the service globally even at this time, with the process scheduled to be complete tomorrow, June 3rd. And as it is rolling out, Bing is slowly swallowing Live Search bit by bit. Users have undoubtedly
noticed that trying to access the Live Search homepage results in a redirect to Bing Beta. But additional web properties associated with Live Search have already started being converted to Bing.

The move is after all only natural, as the Redmond company is transitioning not only to the new search engine, but also to the new brand. Live Search has also managed to disappear from MSN. Until not long ago every search performed via one of the MSN websites was powered by Live Search. This is no longer the case. MSN users now search with Bing. And Live Search is dumped from other websites as well.

“We’re excited to welcome you today to the new home of the Webmaster Center blog and forums, as part of the new Bing Community site. Welcome! The old URLs are now automatically redirecting visitors to this new site, but be sure to update your Favorites listing in your browser to the new site,” revealed Rick DeJarnette, Bing Webmaster Center. “As you can tell, we’re excited about Bing and ready to talk about it. Keep a look out for plenty of updates to come.”

DeJarnette still writes for the Live Search Webmaster Center Blog, but it's just a matter of time before the label is switched to something a tad more Bing-ish, just as it will be the case for the Live Search blog. Bing Is Live Worldwide

Microsoft's next-generation search engine, scratch that, decision engine, is now live worldwide. The Redmond company started rolling out Bing, formerly codenamed Kumo, on May 28, 2009, and is right on track to completing the introduction of the evolution to Live Search by June 3rd. However, users from a variety of markets worldwide that have visited the Bing home page today, June 1st, have no longer been greeted with the Bing introductory video, but by a semi-functional search interface. I say semi-functional because the Bing rollout is yet to be completed and as such some of the features are missing. Still, the search decision engine is ready to give its users a taste of what to expect from the future of Microsoft Internet search engine.

“We’re introducing a new kind of search that goes beyond traditional search engines to help you make faster, more informed decisions. It will do this by combining a great search engine (with powerful new features to improve your results for any query), more organized results, and unique tools to help you make important decisions. We think of Bing as a Decision Engine,” revealed Yusuf Mehdi, senior vice president, Online Audience Business Group, at the end of the past week.

Mehdi promised that Bing would come to the table to resolve the problems that searchers were stumbling upon, including poor relevance and queries left unanswered, because of the lack in evolution of search engines. Essentially, Bing is no longer envisioned as a tool to connect a certain keyword to a website, but instead to deliver comprehensive information that will help users make their decisions.

“So why did we pick Bing as the new brand name? We needed a brand that was as fresh and new as our approach. It needed to be like the product — optimized for the Internet. A name that was memorable, short, easy to spell, and that would function well as a URL around the world. We like Bing because it sounds off in our heads when we think about that moment of discovery and decision making — when you resolve those important tasks. And frankly, the name needed to clearly communicate that this is something new, to invite you to come back, to re-introduce you to our new and improved service and encourage you to give it a try,” Mehdi added.

As I said, not all the features of Bing are live around the world. Users will be able to notice that the highlights for the Bing backgrounds are missing, that they cannot navigate between backgrounds, and that some of the filters and tools are not available as of yet. Bing vs. Google – So It Begins

Bing is Microsoft's answer to all competitive search engines. And at the same time, the Redmond company's service to beat search engines, is not a “search engine.” Bing is a “decision engine,” the software giant claims, aiming to catalyze a change in user perception and make the evolution of Live Search stand out from the crowd. But of course Bing is about closing the gap separating Microsoft from Google on the search engine and online advertising markets, just as it is the result of the company's commitment to grow organically following the failed acquisition of Yahoo in 2008. The Bing website went live, mind you not in a Windows Live or a Live Search sense, on May 28, 2009, but the actual search decision engine will not go live until June 3rd, for the public.

“Today, search engines do a decent job of helping people navigate the Web and find information, but they don’t do a very good job of enabling people to use the information they find,” explained Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO. “When we set out to build Bing, we grounded ourselves in a deep understanding of how people really want to use the Web. Bing is an important first step forward in our long-term effort to deliver innovations in search that enable people to find information quickly and use the information they’ve found to accomplish tasks and make smart decisions.”

For Microsoft it is not just about reinventing its search engine, but also about delivering a new consumer brand. The company has acknowledged repeatedly that Live Search suffered from a branding perspective, and Bing is the answer. Investments between $80 million and $100 million have been poured into marketing Bing as a new way to search.

Bing is positioned as a filter for the information overload users have to navigate with traditional search engines. In this regard, Bing is by no means reinventing the search wheel. The search decision engine will still return results based on the content indexed by its crawler. But the promise from Microsoft is that the indexed content is better than before and that the user experience has evolved with the inclusion of a range of tools allowing for the narrowing down of results. Increased relevancy, a new way to organize search results, task simplification and greater insight are among the results that Bing is aiming for. Whether users will end up binging over googling will confirm or deny the relevance of Microsoft's efforts in search.

Yahoo Search up for grabs for boatloads of money

After failing to make it as a couple to the search engine and online advertising altar in 2008, the Yahoo and Microsoft marriage talks have been rekindled, Yahoo Chief Executive Officer Carol Bartz confirmed while doing an on-stage interview at the D: All Things Digital conference. There's no word on how advanced the negotiations between the two companies are at this point in time, or even if there are negotiations at all. Bartz
admitted that she was indeed talking to Microsoft, but the fact of the matter is that nothing much appears to have been said so far, with the Yahoo CEO revealing that the level of the talks was up to just "Yeah, a little bit."

Bartz took the CEO position from Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang in mid-January 2009. Under Yang's leadership Yahoo turned down Microsoft's unsolicited acquisition bid of $31 per share made on February 1, 2008. At that time, the Redmond company was willing to pay no less than $44.6 billion in cash and stock for Yahoo in order to close the gap separating it from Google on the search engine and online advertising markets. By July 2008, Microsoft had completely retired its initial offer for Yahoo, indicating that it was looking to grow its search engine organically instead.

Bartz did indicate that she was ready to sell Yahoo Search to Microsoft. No figures were revealed, however; Yahoo's CEO mentioned that Microsoft would need nothing short of boatloads of money in order to get its hands on Yahoo Search. And not just boatloads of money, but also the “right technology,” in addition to providing Yahoo with the “right data.”

Microsoft is scheduled to unveil the results of the organic evolution of its search engine today, at the same event. The Redmond company has been not only cooking but also dogfooding (testing internally) codename Kumo, the next step for Live Search, with speculation pointing to the label Bing as the official brand. No word from the software giant as to where it stands on Yahoo.

Bakugan Battle Brawlers Is Out and Rolling

Bakugan Battle Brawlers was launched two days ago by Activision on several different platforms, and the anticipated kids' game should, in theory, rake up a nice number of sales. The game was released for the Xbox 360, the PlayStation3 and PlayStation 2 and for Nintendo's DS and Wii. The DS version will also have a Collector's Edition that will come with a special "Naga" ball as an extra bonus. Licensed by Corus Entertainment Inc.'s Nelvana, the title is inspired by the television series and Spin Master's best-selling toy.

David Oxford of Activision Publishing shared a few launch details of the game. "Bakugan is a true phenomenon that continues to explode in popularity and the videogame will draw even more people into its universe. The Bakugan Battle Brawlers videogame combines the characters and story from the cartoon series with the skill and strategy of the toy line to create an experience like no other." This may sound like nothing more than the typical marketing exaggerations, but, if you're not familiar with the animated series, then learn that the anime appears to be very popular.

Bakugan follows the story of Dan and his friends as their lives take an unexpected turn when mysterious cards fall from the sky. These prove to be magical items and powerful monsters are sealed within. Building a game around these cards, kids all over the world engage in the challenges, but Dan's group manages to stand out from the crowd. The title will follow pretty much the same guidelines, as players will need to carefully roll spheres onto their cards and release the creatures that reside within to engage in battle.

The game may have to wait a little before it can prove its worth, but, if it achieves the same result that the Bakugan toy did, then it will prove to be a real best-seller for its genre. The Bakugan toy won three 2008 "Toy of the Year" awards from the Toy Industry Association and the Bakugan Battle Brawlers New Vestroia Maxus Helios 7 in 1 is part of the "Fabulous 15" list of Toys"R"Us'. Currently, the animated series is aired in the US on Cartoon Network, but on a lot of other channels across the world. If the franchise continues to grow, this could really prove to be a new Pokemon fab.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

Batman has been many things over time. He was the human detective who hanged around with all those superheroes with the awesome powers. He was a dark, torn apart man motivated by the death of his parents to eliminate crime. He was the only man who could take Superman on and win. He was the conscience of a city embraced by crime. Thus, Batman is one of the best known comic heroes and enjoyed several successful big screen outings, with the most recent two movies, directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Cristian Bale, being some of the most popular in history. But can a videogame, with all the restrictions that come with the genre, boil down the complexity of Batman to something accessible, engaging and true to the nature of the character?

Well, Batman: Arkham Asylum delivers on all these three fronts and manages to craft a single player experience that puts Batman, his enemies and the location of the Asylum itself front and center while introducing and building upon simple gameplay mechanics, but combining and evolving as the game progresses.

It's all pretty simple on the surface, very comic book like. The Joker is again captured, a bit too easily, and Batman delivers him to Arkham for safe keeping. The villain manages to escape, taking Commissioner Gordon with him as hostage, and Batman needs to wade through the ample grounds of the Asylum, gloomy and gothic, battling escaped convicts, taking on old foes like Killer Croc and Zsasz, following the trail of clues (he's a detective, remember?) and putting together the puzzle of what the Joker is trying to do. The final step is, as always, stopping him in his tracks and moving him into Arkham Asylum once turned to the medical authorities. There are some interesting questions asked in the game, involving the nature of evil, how far someone can go to cure it and how capable society is of dealing with the issues presented by the existence of a generic Other, an embodiment of everything that normality is not.

Rocksteady, the developer, managed not to overcomplicate the narrative. There are clearly defined goals, well portrayed enemies and good use of the Batman mythology, from the villains presented as psychiatric patients in found interview tapes to the way the story of the place itself and its first warden is uncovered through mysterious symbols that are found throughout the game. It manages to strike a balance normally hard to get: on the one hand, it makes it easy enough for those who only know Batman from the two recent movies to get deeper into his universe, on the other hand, it recreates content that true fans have known for some time in loving fashion and with some personal touches. It's a solid story-telling experience perfectly supporting the gameplay while not becoming the main reason to actually play the game.

Batman seems to dance when knocking enemies off their feet, delivering crushing downward blows or jumping over them only to then take their legs out from under them. His grace remains fully in place as he runs around the scenery, grapples up to a ledge, sails down on his bat wings before landing right behind an unsuspecting enemy that he then silently chokes to move forward. The open areas of the Arkham Asylum complex are a perfect arena for the Bat to display his fighting skills and the game manages to clearly show the player how efficient, quick and soundless he can be. The narrow corridors are not so well suited for grace, but the combat remains fluid and satisfying. The most interesting are the larger indoor areas, those that have multiple levels and those weirdly out of place yet somehow appropriate gargoyles. On them, Batman can both hide from gun carrying baddies and plan his attack while surveying the area in Detective Mode. Gliding with a kick or doing an inverted take down (which practically means tying down an enemy and placing them on the said gargoyle) are superbly animated and conceptually integrated with the Batman persona.

Batman: Arkham Asylum builds on a set of simple concepts: strong fighting mechanics, based on countering the enemies and chaining combos, simple slinging from place to place with the grapple, gadgets that enable specialized strategies, like breaking down some walls and moving obstacles around. They are all very solid and offer an array of tactics, which can be employed against the bad guys inhabiting Arkham and to overcome environmental challenges. Don't make the mistake of underestimating the enemies, a few armed ones can take Batman out pretty quickly, especially in close quarters. Still, a little bit of planning and some well placed batarangs can disable some of them and allow the player to move on for the kill.

If there are gameplay elements that could have been done better, then the platforming sections related to the Scarecrow are the most obvious. It's pretty interesting the first time around although defeating him with the Bat sign does not make a lot of sense but the second time around, it seems like just a way of extending the game time. The boss battles can also be a little irritating, mostly because of the repetition needed to take them out but it's nothing major. Rocksteady might also want to think about how it zones its areas in a potential sequel as impassable force fields tend to become annoying, especially considering the technical prowess of Batman. Other than that, it's graceful, complex, straight forward and engaging. I just wish the enemies were more different, not only when talking about the weapons they carry and how they attack, but in the way they look. The game makes it seem like all the inmates were locked up for 20 years doing push ups and crunches.

Graphics and sound

The game looks very good on the PlayStation 3. There are enough greys and blacks to deliver the dark atmosphere of the Batman universe and there are enough patches of crazy color, from the green of Poison Ivy to the red of the Joker and the bright lights, to make it anything but monotone. The Detective Mode, which covers the world with a blue hue, also looks excellent and the only complaint is that it's so well done that I found myself spending significant portions of the game without looking at the “real” game world.

But the good looks of Arkham Asylum on the PlayStation 3 pale when compared to the way the game looks on the PC, with full PhysX support and an Nvidia video card. There are subtle touches, like the movement of the cape and the ruffling of leaves, which manage to bring it all to life and playing the game is like watching a complex Batman movie. If your PC has an Nvidia card powerful enough, ditch the PS3 and load up Batman: Arkham Asylum on the PC. For a taste of what the PC can offer get the PC demo of the game from Softpedia.

The sounds are a big surprise. The ambient ones are well suited, with Batman moving without a sound and punches sounding admirably meaty when they come into contact with an enemy. But the developers merit a special mention for the dialog. The biggest number of main characters in videogames, when they have a voice (see the case of the good Doctor in Half Life), tend to blabber around about stuff, talking to enemies about their plans, to side kicks about others and often to the player, indirectly. Batman, true to his nature, is curt, quick in communicating essentials and never revealing too much emotion. The Joker and even Harley Quinn express their fear through long monologues threatening “the Bat” but most of the time, Batman's response is a simple “That will not happen” or something along those lines. The solidity of the game shows in these small minutiae. And, of course, the voice work, witch hinges on people like Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill as The Joker and Arleen Sorkin as Harley Quinn (all of them worked on Batman: The Animated Series), is top notch.

Conclusion

A lot of purists were asking whether a superhero videogame could be delivered without dumbing down the subject matter so that a wide audience gets what it's about. Batman: Arkham Asylum clearly shows that story, setting, mechanics and atmosphere can be combined to show off characters, create tension, offer opportunities for combat and exploration while also staying true to what the main character and his villains are all about.

I'm not one of those people who know everything about the Batman universe, the characters or the Asylum itself, so I found the need to hunt down all those unlockables, from interview tapes to Riddler signs, a bit distracting. But whether you know everything about Batman or nothing at all, the game will definitely draw you in with its beautiful dark graphics, showy brawls and coherent story. Get it if you love Batman, brawlers, stealth kills or collectibles, Batman: Arkham Asylum is a truly well put together videogaming experience.

I left the lights on a lot when I was kid. My bedroom, the basement, the hall, the bathroom--they seemed sad when left in the dark. I was told to flip the switch, but I still wasn't good at it. As I got older, and the electric bills were addressed to me, I changed teams. I saw the reason behind the request.

This scenario describes the trouble most people have with their health. They know they should work out or eat right, but they don't really know why. Being alive is a great incentive--it always beats the alternative--but that is too general. It's also a far-away thought.

If you want to feel motivated, you need specific and immediate reasons, which is why my tip for this article is to learn about your body.

Learn about the systems inside, why they need activity and the right food and what happens when they don't get either. What happens, exactly, when you don't eat your fruits and veggies? What happens, precisely, when you confine your muscles to channel surfing and walking to the kitchen.

With the facts tucked away in your mind, you'll have an arsenal of incentives ready to dispatch any time temptation hits. You may walk to the kitchen and reach for the cookie, but the better part of you will stop the reach, deliver the message, and guide you toward the carrots.

Diabetes symptoms reversed by molecule in red wine

A molecule found in grape skins and red wine could reverse diabetes by lowering insulin levels, even among sufferers who have a high-fat diet.

The molecule, resveratrol, normalizes insulin levels after five weeks’ usage, even when there was no change to diet or body weight, a study of laboratory mice has discovered.

But researchers warn diabetics not to rush for the red wine. The experiments with the mice involved direct injections of resveratrol into their brains, and usually the molecule has a hard time crossing the blood-brain barrier. They think that the amount of alcohol needed to be consumed in order to have similar effects would be detrimental to a person’s health.

Do copper bracelets and magnets really ease arthritis pains?

We often see people walking around with copper bracelets on their wrist. The bracelets are supposed to ease muscle aches and arthritis pains – but do they actually work?

Apparently, they are no better than a placebo, or sugar pill – and nor are magnetic wrist straps, which are also worn to ease musculoskeletal pains, a new study has discovered.

The devices were tested on 45 osteoarthritis sufferers, but the researchers couldn’t detect any real difference between them, or when measured against a ‘dummy’ magnetic strap, or non-copper bracelet.

'Magical' plant offers hope for osteoporosis sufferers

A plant that scientists in the 16th century believed had magical powers could prove to be an effective treatment for osteoporosis, the bone-thinning disease.

The ‘vegetable lamb’ plant (Cibotium barmoetz) still plays an important role in Vietnamese folk medicine – and now researchers believe it could help osteoporosis sufferers develop strong bones.

In one study, the plant blocked bone-destroying cells from developing without harming other cells. But it is not the first time that ‘vegetable lamb’ plants have been credited with magical properties – in the 16th and 17th centuries scientists believed its fruit turned into baby sheep.

The good news about being overweight

Doctors have become almost parrot-like in telling us that being overweight can dramatically affect our health – but a new study suggests they are wrong. And being a little on the tubby side even seems to protect you against cancer.

A new report from Germany reveals that being overweight – having a body mass index (BMI) of between 25 and 30 – doesn’t make any difference to how long you may live. In fact, men who were overweight had a 7 per cent lower death rate from cancer than men with a normal weight.

In a review of 42 studies, researchers from the University of Hamburg found that our weight affects our health only when we become obese, which is defined as any BMI score above 30. Overall, the death rate among obese people is 20 per cent higher than in people with lower BMI scores. But as we get older, even obesity seems to have less of an impact on our health.

Tingling pains can be eased by chilli pepper ingredient

Many of us suffer tingling pain and numbness in our extremities – and now researchers have discovered that the hot stuff in chilli peppers could be an effective antidote.

The active ingredient, capsaicin, is used in skin creams such as Zostrix and Capsin, and it helps ease nerve pains in four out of 10 sufferers, a new review has discovered.

Researchers reviewed nine studies that involved 1,600 participants who suffered tingling and numbing pains because of diabetes, AIDS, shingles and arthritis. A common side effect of capsaicin creams is local skin irritation, such as burning, stinging or redness, and some people stopped the treatment.

An Olympic Lesson in Motivation

But this isn't what we see. This isn't what we feel when we watch these Olympians. It isn't what we think when we watch any expert or great success.

We see the finished product, shining brightly in designer packaging. We see triumph and achievement, not training. We see the riches, not the rags.

And this, as much as anything else, is why motivation - that inner drive that carries us toward all we desire - continues to escape us.

Today that comes to an end. Today I will open your eyes to a new way of viewing the changes you wish to carry out and the challenges that are attempting to stop you.

The Olympians we admire might possess unique physical talent and natural gifts, but that inner fire that compels them forward is within us all. It's time to set it free.

Authors Don't Write Books
Whether it's a a friend who lost forty pounds or a track star streaking across the screen, our eyes can only see what is in front of us.

And more often than not, that picture of success is daunting.

It's overwhelming, to see ourselves reaching those heights. No, it's more than that. It's unbelievable.

When we view success at its peak, we feel separated from it. We see ourselves as incapable of doing something similar.

Take a book, for instance.

Seeing a novel on a shelf leads to the same conclusion in the minds of anyone posed with the question: 'Oh, I could never write a book.'

This view is all wrong. The reason? Authors don't write books.

This is one of the most important ideas to understand. I know it sounds simple, but it separates those who progress from those who wish and wait.

We've already said that most see the finished product and feel overwhelmed by the prospect of achieving the same goal.

If this only occurred when watching an Olympic athlete, there would be little issue. But that's not how it works. We get that same sense of inability when viewing any worthwhile achievement.

Losing weight, finding a new career, starting a business or new relationship, overcoming personal debt - these are outcomes millions wish to pursue but don't believe they can achieve.

They can't see past the finished product.

To get motivated, to truly ignite your drive, you must see your goals as achievable. You must believe in yourself and your abilities. You must see success, not as a matter of unattainable greatness, but merely as a matter of time.

Losing weight begins with a single decision. Finding the job you love begins with a single Google search. And starting a new relationship begins with a single look.

The world is built upon blocks, not one massive stone.

One step, one movement, one decision, one action. These are the things that feed success. These are things that you can do today.

Over the past few days I have inexplicably come across a number of marketing tools that were new to me; I am not sure if it was by chance or a lot were just released or something. Anyway, I am still testing a few of the more promising ones but one free tool called 4Q could really help many a webmaster understand their visitors better.

Well now there is an easy way to get these answers and it is the classiest solution I have seen so far... and better yet it is free! Enter 4Q, the brainchild of analytics guru (or analytics "god" in my opinion) Avinash Kaushik and analytics company iPerceptions.

So what does 4Q do?
4Q is designed to answer 4 critical questions for you:

1. How satisfied are my visitors?
2. What are visitors at my website there to do?
3. Are they completing what they set out to do?
4. If not, why not? / If yes, what did they like best about the online experience?

The system is very simple for anyone to setup as Avinash personally notes in a helpful video tutorial he created.

Here is how it works once it is setup on your website:

1. Of every 5 people that enters your website 1 will be selected and politely requested to participate in a survey to help you ensure your website has provided them with what they need; you can increase the ratio to whatever you like, all the way to 100% of visitors. Note: the survey is presented as a request to the visitor, provided in the politest manner possible and is not a popup.
2. Once the visitor says "Yes" they agree to participate a popup window will be created and will be minimized to their task bar as they continue their session through your website. Should the visitor say "No" the request disappears and the visitor is taken to your website and will not be bothered again.
3. Once the visitor has completed his/her session on your website he/she can open the popup that is waiting in their taskbar and quickly answer the 4 questions. Upon completion of the survey they are thanked and the popup disappears.

StepForth implemented this system on our main site (www.stepforth.com) just last weekend and so far I have been impressed by the preliminary feedback. StepForth's website is about to get replaced with a new design and emphasis so it is even more worthwhile to learn whatever I can about the current site's failings. In the spirit of sharing and accountability here are our preliminary 4Q results in PDF format; sharing this information will make us improve our approval rating that much faster. Here is an example of the survey showing what we could improve upon:

In the above screenshot (click image for larger version) one can clearly see some visitors have had problems finding the latest news that we publish on our SEO News Blog and about StepForth's company information. From this feedback it is now obvious we need to provide clearer routes to both types of content. It may seem we are jumping the gun since our data is based on only a few replies; however, I have a hunch that the people that replied represent a great many who had the same problem but did not fill out or get invited to fill out the survey.

You may be wondering... doesn't analytics provide a lot of these answers? Not really, as Avinash states "Clickstream data is often missing the context... But with answers to these simple questions you'll have the context to make sense of it all." In other words, combining 4Q and a great analytics program will provide the information you need to make even more insightful changes to influence your website's success.

Will 4Q Impede Search Engines?
No, 4Q is a JavaScript-based system and since JavaScript is not activated by visiting search engines you can be confident that 4Q will not impact your search engine rankings. Google Offers Stronger Conversion Tracking via AdWords

If you are a Google AdWords advertiser and rely on Google's conversion feature to help you figure out your campaign budgets, you'll be interested to learn more about some conversion tracking features they put into place last month. John over at PPC Hero has a nice write up on the features and how you can apply them.

John explains:
Conversions can now be segmented as one of the following types:

* Leads
* Purchase/Sale
* Sign-Up
* Pageview
* "Other"

Within each conversion type, you can create any number of actions. For example, let's say you are selling neck ties for Father's Day. This is a limited time offer and a very specific sale. So, you would click on "Create a New Action" and select "Purchase/Sale" to choose the right conversion tracking code. Input "Father's Day Neck Ties" as the action name for reporting. To complete the setup, you would then place the tracking code on your purchase thank you page. Once visitors to your site begin buying your Father's Day neck ties, these conversions will show up in AdWords appropriately labeled!

While I'd encourage any business to look toward investing in strong analytics software that can do this type of tracking without giving Google access to your exact conversion rates and online sales flow, this is still an option worth looking at if you're starting out with zero budget.

Does Your Blog Have a Twitter Landing Page?

One of the best bit of social media advice I ever received came from Chris Brogan when he said that when you want to decide if a social media tool is for you, observe how someone that is really good at the tool uses it. Right now Twitter is hotter than Memphis in August, and one of the true power users of Twitterville is Laura Fitton, who is known on Twitter as Pistachio.

So it should probably come as no surprise that Laura seems to have literally created the concept of adding a Twitter landing page on your blog. On your Twitter profile page, there's a small area where you can create a bio and link to your blog. But Laura saw an opportunity to improve on the skimpy space that Twitter provides.

Laura added a link on her Twitter page that sends you to a special page on her blog that explains more about who she is, and what she does. I emailed her to ask her why she created this page, and here's her response:

"Here's the thing, when someone clicks a Twitter profile URL, they're probably trying to get just a little bit more information on who is writing the tweets. Chances are, they don't have a bunch of time to go in-depth. So I thought it might be nice to put out a little welcome mat.

I'll probably expand it to fill in some basic info about how I engage with Twitter, like asking the favor of an "@reply hello" so that I can return the follow. For others, they might use the space to tell folks what their "follow back" policy is (it's different for everyone,) really, or other stuff to know about following them. Like, I point out that I tweet an awful lot and that for someone new to Twitter, they might be better off following me in their RSS reader so my frequent tweets don't drown out the stream."

The page also includes links to posts she has written about Twitter. I absolutely love this idea because Laura is thinking about how her followers on Twitter view her page. She is also already thinking about the future and how she can possibly change the page to make it more useful to her followers in helping her communicate with them.

This goes back to Chris' advice about observing how people that are really good at a particular social tool, use that tool. Laura has found a way to tap into the incredible communication and networking power of Twitter to become a literal superstar in the social media space. She does so by understanding the capabilities of the tool, and utilizing it effectively.

So if you spend any amount of time on Twitter, consider adding your own Twitter landing page to your blog. I will be creating one for my blog soon, and given that Twitter is sending me more and more traffic, it only makes good sense.

BTW if you are still getting your feet wet on Twitter, make sure you follow both Chris Brogan and Laura "Pistachio" Fitton. They are two of the true Twitter experts, and both are sincerely good people to boot!

It is not hard to find a web design company or to find web developers to develop your online application according to your needs. The question is…do they understand search engines? Do they know how to optimize your whole website?

So you told your web design company that you would like to appear on search engines. Great, now what? It’s not an accomplishment if you type in your company name in the search engines and you are ranked number 1. How can this benefit you? If people already knew your company name why not just type in your url to browse to your site (if they knew your url of course).

What if you were ranked on the first page on the search engines for the keywords your company relates to? If you were, people would find you without typing in your company name on the search engines.

Most web designers/developers don’t know the critical information regarding SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and the vital role it plays when designing/developing a new site. SEO needs to be taken in consideration from the first moment when the development for your site has begun. Most of the factors like title tags, headings, keywords, meta descriptions, content, image tags, linking structure, xml sitemaps, etc plays an important role in the on page optimization of your website.

SEO doesn’t consist of just on page optimization. Off page SEO plays a bigger part than most think. Off page SEO consists of article submissions, press releases, social bookmarking, back links, etc.

All of these factors needs to be in place if you want people to know about your website.

What is the point if you have the greatest, nicest looking site and no one knows about it? It is the same as if you had a expensive new sports car and it just stays in your garage because you don’t have fuel to drive it.

If you are in the process of designing / developing a new site, I strongly suggest that you speak to your web designer about this and to make sure that they understand SEO and Search Engine Marketing. Your website should be build from the start with on and off page SEO in mind.

Part 3

In Part 2 I discussed sitemaps and that search engine bots crawl XML sitemaps easier than HTML sitemaps. But now you have created your XML Sitemap, now what? In the next section I will explain what you can do with your sitemap and where to submit it for the best results.

1. Google Webmaster Tools
Google Webmaster Tools helps you see how your site is performing in Google’s search results, troubleshoot potential problems, and build Google-friendly sites. With the Webmaster tools you can see “Web Crawl” errors the Google bot has experienced when crawling your site (broken links, http errors and sitemap errors).

You can view diagnostics for your website, statistics that includes your websites top search queries (only in Google), indexed stats, crawl stats and subscriber stats. You can even view statistics on what the Google bot sees about your website.

On the Webmasters tool is a dedicated section called “Sitemaps”. On this section you can enter the url of where your XML Sitemap is situated for the Google bot to crawl. Once you have entered the url it takes a couple of hours for the bot to crawl your sitemap and it shows how many pages it has found in the sitemap. After the bot has crawled your sitemap it will show you the status of the sitemap as well as the number of pages in the sitemap and how many pages found on your sitemap is indexed by Google.

The Google bot doesn’t crawl your sitemap only once. This tool also shows you the date when the Google crawled your XML Sitemap and it is quite usefull when you have a large site with regular fresh content to see if the new content has been indexed.

2. Yahoo Site Explorer
Yahoo Site Explorer is similar to Google Webmasters and they have a section called “Feeds”. On this section you can enter the url of your XML Sitemap (Feed) for the Yahoo bots to crawl your sitemap. I have noticed that it takes a bit longer for the Yahoo bot to crawl your sitemap.

On Yahoo Site Explorer you can also view a couple of statistics regarding your website. Crawled pages, Known pages, external and internal links are also shown on the statistics section.

3. MSN Webmaster Centre
MSN has a tool that shows basic statistics for your website. It shows crawl issues, backlinks, outbound links, keywords and sitemaps associated with your website. On the Sitemaps section you can add the url of your website but it doesn’t have a function where you can see how many of the pages found in the sitemap are indexed by MSN.

I have never had much success with MSN so I just stick to the tools provided by Google and Yahoo.

The Google Webmasters Tool and Yahoo Site Explorer are great tools that you can use to further enhance your website. You can view the number of indexed pages of your website and errors found on the links.

Content is King
Ever heard of the popular phrase “Content is King“? Regular updated and new Content for your website is critical. Search engines and portals are constantly changing and adjusting their algorithms, but one thing has always remained constant and that is Content is king. Search engines value relevant content and they reward websites that have it with higher rankings.

Search engines processes of ranking pages (page rank) means that the relevant content on your web pages matters to your websites ranking.

Well written balanced content with targeted keywords is the key to achieve great search engine rankings. Using targetted keywords on your content in a specific format is one of the elements that are needed for good optimization of your website. This is all achieved by formatted and balanced keywords through your content with the right keyword density.

What is Keyword Density? Keyword density means the number of times that your specifically chosen keywords appears in relation to the total word count on the specific content page. There are tools available on the web for free that can give you statistics regarding the keyword density of your content pages. Now the proper amount of density is a debate that is not totally settled. A good keyword density seems to be around 8% -16% . Less than that keyword density and your content pages may not hold as much density to the specific keywords that are being search for. On a higher keyword density than 16% and it may look to search engines that you are keyword spamming and it can ruin your search engine rankings as well.

A CMS (Content Managment System) and a Blog is a great way for fresh content to be distibuted as you are not limited to a number of pages. With a well written XML sitemap, search engines will find your new content fast. If you use the tools as explained in Part 3, you can view how fast your content gets indexed.

In the second part I will be discussing HTML Sitemaps and XML Sitemaps.

1. HTML Sitemaps
Sitemaps are exactly as the word describes Site-Map. It consist of a page where you have all the pages on your website listed as links. If you have a website with hundreds of pages, users can quickly jump to a page via your sitemap. These sitemaps are called HTML sitemaps. To view an example of a HTML sitemap click here. You will noticed that all the pages on that website is listed on the sitemap.

HTML sitemaps are intended for users. I will repeat that “HTML sitemaps are intended for users”. Most of the times it is difficult for search engine bots to crawl your HTML sitemap as it contains lots of jibber jabber (funny html tags, text on images, etc).

Google and Yahoo came up with a plan to create a sitemap which they both can read by writing an additional Sitemap in the programming language called XML. These Sitemaps are known as XML Sitemaps.

2. XML Sitemaps
Search engine search bots can easily crawl your XML Sitemap as it is written by using the Sitemap Protocol. To view an example of a XML Sitemap click here. XML Sitemaps are not intended for users and it is a simple way for search engine bots to crawl your website as it is written in a language that they understand.

For dynamic websites (a CMS system, Blog, E-commerce site, etc) this is a great feature as you can create a script to create a dynamic XML sitemap everytime you add a new page. This way you can be sure that the search engines will find your new content fast.

You might be wondering “How will the search engines ever know about my XML Sitemap?”. I will discuss this in great detail in Part 3 where you can submit your XML Sitemap and you can view how many pages are indexed via the Sitemap.

Five Startup on page SEO tips

This post will be the first in a series where I will be discussing basic on page SEO (Search Engine Optimization) tips and techniques. Part 1

1. Google Analytics (or any other analysis plugin)
I strongly suggest you get an analysis plugin from day one for your website. What does itl do? It shows critical information regarding your site’s visitors. It show’s how users browsed to your website, unique visitors, returning visitors, which keywords were used in the search engines, which pages were viewed, time spent on the site, etc. This tool is important from day one as you can exactly view statistics regarding your website and it gives you a rough indication for areas of improvement.

Most analytics tools has a section where you can setup automated reports to be emailed to required recipients. I usually let the reporting get emailed weekly when I start a new SEO campaign and when I’m satisfied with the statistics I switch it to monthly reports.

2. Title tag
Second on the list is the title tag. When you are viewing the search results on a search engine, the title is the link that contains the url for that specific page. In the beginning it is a good idea to keep your company name in the title tag followed by information regarding the page. For example you have a page listing all the services that your business has to offer you can create the title tag like this “Company name, services information as well as the area your company resides in and does business in”. The reason for this is so that search engines can associate your services with your company name. At a later stage when you are well known online, you can make way with your company name and insert extra keywords describing the contents of the page.

3. Keywords
Third on the list is “keywords”. Keywords has been in the SEO world from the beginning and is most likely the most important factor regarding SEO. I will discuss “keywords” in more detail at a later stage and might as well be a topic on it’s own. You search on search engines by using keywords describing what you are looking for. It is very important to only use keywords found on the content for the page where you are adding them. Please take note: Don’t use more keywords than it is necessary. One powerful keyword is worth more than twenty rubbish keywords. Study your page carefully and think which keywords the user will be using on the search engines to browse to your site.

4. Meta Descriptions
Fourth on the list are Meta Descriptions. Meta Descriptions goes hand in hand with keywords as it is what is displayed to the user when they have searched using keywords on the search engines. Ever noticed the small description underneath your link in the search engine results page? Most search engines uses a maximum of 160 chars for the description. Select a sentence or two found on the specific content for the page you are creating it for.

5. Valid XHTML Practices
Not everyone are professional web developers that knows the in’s and outs of valid XHTML practices but a good HTML structure is the foundation for building a strong SEO campaign and to enhance your visibility online. Search engines can’t read your website links if you have a menu structure that is written purely in Javascript. It makes it difficult for them to crawl and see the pages listed on your website. There are other ways to sidestep this (XML Sitemaps), but that will also be discussed in detail on another post.

Ask your web design/development agency if they are using correct XHTML practices and ask them to explain it in detail with you.

Web sites designed with a heavy emphasis on graphics, frames and Flash or other codes that are not HTML compliant, can make your website’s page rank suffer. Search engines can’t view text on images or flash animations and these kind of pages require strong keywords and meta descriptions associated with them. By doing it this way, you lose a couple of hundred points for the optimization for your site as the golden rule still stands “Content is King”.

Here Are 10 of Them

From the obvious to the "Hey-I-never-thought-of-that-great-idea-before", here are 10 of the top 52 tips on how to optimize your website for its turbo-charge rocket ride up the search engine rankings.

Be bold. Use the tags around some of your keywords on each page. Do NOT use them everywhere the keyword appears. Once or twice is plenty.

Deep linking. Make sure you have links coming in to as many pages as possible. What does it tell a search engine when other web sites are linking to different pages on your site? That you obviously have lots of worthwhile content. What does it tell a search engine that all your links are coming in to the home page? That you have a shallow site of little value, or that your links were generated by automation rather than by the value of your site. Here is an example of deep linking, in this case to my personal happiness workbook.

Become a foreigner. Canada and the UK have many directories for websites of companies based in those countries. Can you get a business address in one of those countries?

Newsletters. Offer articles to ezine publishers that archive their ezines. The links stay live often for many years in their archives.

First come, first served. If you must have image links in your navigation bar, include also text links. However, make sure the text links show up first in the source code, because search engine robots will follow the first link they find to any particular page. They won't follow additional links to the same page. You can see this in action at the link to the home page on this web site monitoring page

Multiple domains. If you have several topics that could each support their own website, it might be worth having multiple domains. Why? First, search engines usually list only one page per domain for any given search, and you might warrant two. Second, directories usually accept only home pages, so you can get more directory listings this way. Why not a site dedicated to gumbo pudding pops?

Article exchanges. You've heard of link exchanges, useless as they generally are. Article exchanges are like link exchanges, only much more useful. You publish someone else's article on the history of pudding pops with a link back to their site. They publish your article on the top ten pudding pop flavors in Viet Nam, with a link back to your site. You both have content. You both get high quality links. (More on high quality links in other tips.)

Titles for links. Links can get titles, too. Not only does this help visually impaired surfers know where you are sending them, but some search engines figure this into their relevancy for a page.

Not anchor text. Don't overdo the anchor text. You don't want all your inbound links looking the same, because that looks like automation - something Google frowns upon. Use your URL sometimes, your company name other times, "Gumbo Pudding Pop" occasionally, "Get gumbo pudding pops" as well, "Gumbo-flavored pudding pops" some other times, etc.

Site map. A big site needs a site map, which should be linked to from every page on the site. This will help the search engine robots find every page with just two clicks. A small site needs a site map, too. It's called the navigation bar. See how the second navigation bar at the bottom of Last Minute Florida Villas is like a mini-site map?

Targeted landing pages is a powerfull business tool to increase leads, sales and conversions. Turning a couple of extra visitors to sales leads or clients can mean a substantial increase in business revenue. Instead of wasting a click through to your website, you make your pages work for you.

Importance of landing pages
Email marketers has long known the value of specialized landing pages to receive the clicks from a newsletter or a online advertisement. As part of the whole process, a unique new page is created that repeats the offer to the user, and carries through to the final sale closing. The only purpose for this unique page is to sell the product or service highlighted in the email newsletter or advertisement.

Most online marketers understand that after countless attempts that a website home page is not the best place to send prospective customers if you are marketing a special service on a newsletter or advertisement. The home page of the site is too general, and not focussed directly on conversions to paying customers. The home page is more of an introduction to the business in general. SEO tips on things to do and don’t do

To attract more visitors to your website is the ultimate goal in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Everyone agrees that organic search results is more effective for conversion and producing positive results.

Websites that have a higher organic search ranking are usually more trusted by people for a service or product and it shows that the website has authority.

This post is the first part in a series where I will be discussing things to do for the optimization of your website.

12 Search Engine Optimization steps to do:

1. Research: Start your SEO campaign with keyword research. Select key phrases that are highly relevant to the services that your business provides. Specific key phrases with 3-4 words are best if you want visitors that are ready to buy.
2. Structure: Use keywords in your domain name, page names, titles, headings, folder names, etc.
3. Navigation:Use keywords in your navigation links. Make your website easy to navigate for both search engines and for visitors. Include a XML sitemap if your website navigation is complex.
4. META Tags: Use keywords and key phrases in the title, description and keyword tags. Each page in your website should have about 4 keyword phrases that are highly relevant to the content found on that page.
5. Content: Use keywords in your content. Use keywords 1-2 times in the top 25% of the text.
6. Local: Take advantage of local search opportunities by using your city, state and community names in your body text and on your contact page.
7. Valid Code: Validate your code and remove coding errors. These errors interfere with spiders crawling your site and they affect browser compatibility and usability. There are many online code validation websites available.
8. XML Sitemap: Include a XML sitemap for your website and submit the sitemap to Google Webmaster tools and Yahoo Site Explorer.
9. Links: Gain backlinks to your website from highly relevant blogs, authority sites, directories and other websites that are part of your industry.
10. Blog: Start a blog either as part of your website or on a separate domain. Link to relevant pages on your website using your keyword phrases. Comment and participate on other blogs.
11. Web Analytics: Install website analytics on your website to monitor progress. Watch not only your overall visitor count, but which keyword phrases are bringing visitors and from which search engines.
12. Patience: Do learn patience. Search engine optimization is a long term commitment.

Reaching Women via Word of Mouth Marketing

As a hobby blogger in the "mom" realm, I often get swamped at conferences by companies looking to market their products to women. These companies have figured out that women are online en masse and they're communicating their likes, dislikes and daily lives with friends and strangers. I applaud their initiative in trying to reach out to women on the web, but sometimes I wish they'd take a step back and think a little harder about how they approach these women.

With that in mind, I think it's essential for marketers who target women to take a trek over to Church of the Customer Blog to read Jackie Huba's latest post: "5 things you need to know about women and word of mouth."

There's no doubt word of mouth works well with women; after all, we're social creatures. None the less, there are a few subtle differences in how marketers should push word of mouth to us if they'd like us to pass things on to our friends. Jackie shares some insight and a handful of tips from Michelle Miller, co-author of "The Soccer Mom Myth: Today's Female Consumer: Who She Really Is, Why She Really Buys."

Huba starts with some stats on how women spread the word.
Women are three times more likely to share personal stories with a friend than men. Ask any woman how she found her hairdresser, doctor, or favorite wine, and she is likely to tell you that it was from a friend. Women are natural word of mouth spreaders. They are wired that way - with four times as many connections between the left and right hemispheres of the brain, women tap deeply into that area that is responsible for bonding and connecting with others.

Most marketers read a paragraph like the one above and rejoice; they've finally found the key to getting their product in front of legions of buyers. They just need to convince some mom to blog about it.

Except...that's not quite right.

See, one of the points I push home hard when I teach about viral marketing is the need to create a campaign or offer that someone is willing to stake their own reputation on. After all, if you want them to tell their friends, you're asking them to evangelize your product. If they are evangelizing your product to someone who ends up disliking it, they risk losing credibility. While you've got to look at things from the "will they risk their reputation on it" angle for all forms of viral marketing, you have to give it extra consideration when you're trying to work via women.

Huba writes:
If you are doing business with her, and she values your relationship, it may seem perfectly acceptable to ask her for a list of friends who might benefit from your services. But that may not be a good idea, even if she thinks you're the best thing since Starbuck's drive-thru. She is the gatekeeper of her relationships. She's not being stingy, she's being protective. A better idea might be to give her a few of your business cards and say, "if you know of anyone who might benefit from my service, feel free to give them my card."

In other words...

Don't expect women to spread the word for you, enable their ability to do so.

Don't ask them for access to their friends and family, give them access to YOU so they can share that access.

Don't tell them what to offer or what to say, make them happy and let them create the offer or pitch themselves.

After all, women know their friends better than you do. If you impress them enough to make them want to tell their friends, they'll find a far better way to spread the word than you would have.

Black Hat SEO: Link Farms

Linking farms better known as “Link Farms” is a type of SEO called “Black Hat SEO” . It involves the linking to websites that are not relevant for the purpose to increase the websites link popularity and PR (page rank). This sort of artificial and under the table link building is transparent, and when the search engine crawlers and bots pick it up, they will penalize the website that practices it.

Link farms are considered as a bad linking strategy. To put it in simple terms “it is a form of spamming” as it is trying to manipulate the search engines.

Link farms comprises of a group of websites that are linked and “interlinked” with each other so that the high PR (page rank) pages passes their value onto other websites that is not relevant to the host page. A SEO (Search Engine Optimization) website participating in link farms always contains links to unrelated websites, unlike websites with valid links to relevant sites.

A valid website link is always related to the websites page topic. Valid website links are encouraged for healthy PPC (Pay Per Click) online marketing. Example, if a certain website is devoted to video games that links to the video game developer’s website for review purposes, it is considered as a valid link. Websites affiliated with linking farms does not provide any useful relative information as they always link with other bogus and irrelevant website information.

There are many other Black Hat SEO techniques and most of the search engines are aware of this and it might only help you for a short while. But when found practicing it your website (the one you dearly treasure) will be sandboxed by the search engines.

What is Black Hat SEO?

Ever wondered exactly what Black Hat SEO means? It is the unethical under the table way of search engine marketing. Think you don’t know about it? I am sure you have at least browsed to a couple of websites practicing these methods.

There are a couple of methods regarding Black Hat SEO and you can find information below regarding a couple of them with a brief description on the Black Hat SEO method.

Keyword Stuffing
It is by repeating keywords on your page in a un user friendly way usually hidden from the viewer. It is an attempt to manipulate your page ranking and search engines takes note of this.

Invisible Text
Exactly as the heading suggests “invisible text”. Example: using a white background with white text. Once more the user can’t see the text because it is hidden and it is focused on search engine bots and crawlers

Cloaking
Search engines knows what is on your website as their spiders crawl your pages periodically and adds them to their index. Cloaking means showing a page to the search engine crawlers and a completely different one to the users browsing the site.

Doorway Pages
A doorway page is a web page built specifically with the intention of ranking well in the search engines without any real valuable content of its own. Doorway pages usually links to the real destination page with valuable content or redirects there.

Selling Page Rank
Selling of text links to advertisers/web masters on a high page rank page that passes the page rank value onto their website.

Buying Expired Domains
There are link spammers that monitors (must be boring) DNS records for domains that will expire soon or that has recently expired. The link spammers then buys the domain and replaces the content and links with their own. Most search engines resets the link data on expired domains.

Link Spamming
Link spamming similar to link farming (see next heading). Link spamming takes advantage of link based ranking algorithms, such as Google’s Page Rank (PR) algorithm. It gives and passes a higher page rank (PR) to a website the more other highly (PR) ranked websites links to it.

Link Farming
I wrote an article a while back on why link farming is a bad SEO practice. It involves the linking to websites that are not relevant for the purpose to increase the websites link popularity and PR (page rank) value.

Spam Blogs
Spam blogs better known as “splogs” are similar to link farming. Spam blogs are fake blogs created only for spamming.

Page Hijacking
Page hijacking is achieved by creating a copy of a website which shows the content similar to the original content of the hijacked website to a web crawler but redirects the user to unrelated websites.

Mirror Websites
Mirror websites is the hosting of multiple web sites all with similar content but using different URLs containing keywords in the URL. Most popular search engines gives a higher page rank (PR) to pages where the specific keyword searched for appears in the websites URL.

URL Redirection etc.
The URL Redirection method is used by taking the website viewer to a different page without their intervention. For example using META refresh tags, javascript or another server side method.
