Important Website Ranking Factors to Avoid

High search engine rankings generate organic search traffic to a website and it is therefore very important to focus on achieving high rankings for your selected website keywords. There are factors that you should try to avoid that may prevent your website from achieving high rankings. In this article we will be looking at some of these factors and the reasons why they might have a negative impact on your website search rankings.

Factors to try and avoid:

1. Using flash in your website design

Most search engines cannot index Flash pages. Search engines read the normal text content on your website and if you do use flash it is very important to also use normal text. Due to the visible impact of flash on a website a lot of website designers prefer to incorporate it into the website design.

2. Slow loading pages

Page loading speed is one of the important factors within the search engine algorithms and slow loading web pages are penalized. The speed with which your web pages load also plays a big part in the user experience of visitors to your website. Make sure that the hosting server that you use has a fast internet connection. Try to keep the size of your pages small and effective and look at splitting content into more pages if you have a lot of content on one page.

3. Dynamically created web pages

Dynamically created web pages are great for managing huge websites but search engine spiders find it difficult to index these pages since they do not exist until requested. Search engines can index dynamic web pages up to a point but your web pages might be ignored by the spider and not indexed at all.

4. Not properly configuring the robots.text file

You should always check to make sure that the robots.text file of your website is configured correctly in order for search engine spiders to crawl your website. If not configured properly this may block search engine spiders from crawling your web pages.

5. Using special characters in your URL

Search engine spiders find it very difficult to index URLs containing special characters. Do not use &, $, =, % or ? In your website URL as these characters will prevent the spiders from indexing your web pages.

6. Limited content on your pages

Websites consisting of less than 6 pages containing 100 words or less each do not rank high on the search results. Search engines aim to provide their users with web pages that contains valuable and relevant content based on the search query entered. Always look at having 6 pages or more that contains relevant content. The bigger your website the easier it will be to achieve high rankings. Search engine spiders love web pages with a lot of text that they can index.

7. Unreliable hosting servers

Your website needs to be available in order for search engine spiders to index the web pages. If you use a hosting server with a lot of down time your site may not be indexed or be removed if already indexed. Internet users will not be able to visit your site when your hosing server is down and this may cost you a lot of money in lost sales.

8. Incorrect HTML code

Use a HTML validator to check if the HTML code used on your website contains errors. Incorrect HTML code may prevent search engine spiders from indexing your web pages. Always ensure that the actual content of your web page is easy to find and not hidden by JavaScript or HTML code.

All of the factors mentioned above may prevent your website from being crawled and indexed by the search engine spiders. The time and money that you have spend on keyword optimization and search engine optimization will be wasted if the search engines can not access or crawl your website.
